Dear Genesis Family,
Welcome back! We are excited to receive our scholars and families back for another year. It was great to see many of you at Open House this past Friday and we are excited to begin what we believe will be a great year.
Important updates are below:
General Patience – We ask all parents to be patient for the first week or two. Every process may not work perfectly according to plan, and we will have to adjust. Schedules will change. Families may be enrolling throughout the week. It is always a part of the experience at the beginning of the year.
Arrival – Regular drop-off begins at 7:15 am. (early morning care begins at 6:30 a.m. for those who registered with Global Tech). Scholars will have their temperature checked before exiting the car lane. Parents will be expected to take their scholars home or get them medical attention if they have a high temperature. Parents are also expected to remain in their cars. Scholars will be escorted to designated areas by staff. Please be prepared to be patient as we work through this process.
- Note: Parents of Kindergarten and 1st-grade scholars (along with 2nd grade scholars NEW to Genesis) should have received information about the option of a later arrival for the first two days of school.
Covid-19 Protocols – Due to the continued spread of COIVD-19 we are asking all parents to continue to send their scholars with masks. Staff members will be wearing masks until further notice. Genesis will continue to take temperatures as scholars arrive (as noted above). Classrooms have air filters and cleaning protocols are in place. Additional notes on protocols are in the attached Re-Opening plan, which will also be posted to the Genesis website. Additional questions can be directed to covid@giacademy.org.
Parents in Building – Parents should not expect to enter the building during arrival or dismissal unless they have an appointment or are directed to do so by staff. Parents should be prepared to escort scholars into the building if they arrive late (after 8:00 a.m.). Parents who enter the building will be expected to wear a mask.
Dismissal – Dismissal begins at 2:45 for K-4, and 3:45 for grades 5 and up. All dismissals will be from the car line. Again, patience will be important. All families will be given dismissal numbers and cards to put on their car dashboard within the first week of school to facilitate the process. Staff will also have walkie-talkies as back-ups. We will adjust as needed. Note: Please do not park in front of driveways or block streets in the surrounding neighborhood.
Parent Contacts – Please note that our Executive Directors have been assigned differently this year. Their contact information is as follows::
- Boys Academy – Mr. Tracy DuBose (tdubose@giacademy.org)
- Girls Academy – Mrs. Renetta Dees (rdees@giacademy.org)
- Curriculum and Instruction (both Academies) – Dr. Crystal LaVoulle (clavoulle@giacademy.org)
Your primary contacts are still your scholar’s teachers (for instructional information) and our front desk/customer service specialist Ms. Cazaubon for general information (404-990-3844 and info@giacademy.org). Other important contacts include:
- Girls Academy Dean of Students – Ms. Taryn Rice (trice@giacademy.org)
- Boys Academy Dean of Students – Please welcome Mr. James Jackson (jajackson@giacademy.org).
- Parent Liaison - Mr. Patrick Remy (former Genesis teacher) at premy@giacademy.org.
Cell Phones – Remember that Genesis does not allow scholars to bring cell phones, smart watches, or any other personal electronic device (PED) on campus. If parents have extraordinary circumstances that requires their scholar to have a cell phone on campus, those parents must reach out to one of our Deans of Students to inquire about a cell phone contract.
Schedules – Please do not expect to see schedules on the first day. Changes may occur during the first week and schedules will be sent as soon as everything is finalized.
We look forward to seeing everyone tomorrow morning as we begin this great journey together.
Be safe, be healthy, be blessed!
This Friday is an asynchronous learning day. Please refer to teacher emails, Canvas or Dojo for teachers' specifics on attendance requirements and assignments.

Dear Families,
On March 15-17 we will administer the final Write Score assessment for the 2021-2022 school year. Write Score provides robust tools for formative writing assessments designed to help schools, teachers, and students improve writing. With standards-aligned assessments, instructional resources, and historical student data reports, Write Score provides tools to help teachers pinpoint instruction, save time, and meet students’ diverse literacy needs.
The 2022 Winter Write Score assessment will take place at 8:45AM on the following days:
- Tuesday, March 15 for 3rd-5th Grades
- Wednesday, March 16 for 6th-10 Grades
- Thursday, March 17 for Makeups
Scholars will report to their respective homerooms to complete the assessment.
- Scholars in grades 3-10 will be required to type a response to each assessment question.
- Scholars can bring one sheet of paper and a pencil to the test session to pre-write.
- The website for the assessment is: student.writescore.com
- Scholars and parents in grades 3-10 should watch this video to familiarize yourselves with the assessment process.
*Note: Login information will not be available until the test session begins.
Thank you,
GIA Testing Admin
Dear Genesis Family,
I recently had the opportunity to witness a video of a fight that happened at another school. Students circled around and watched (and encouraged) the two people (two girls) to keep fighting. It was bad. I was reminded of one of the reasons why Genesis was founded – to have a culture where such behavior was never normal. Our scholars are not perfect, but that behavior is not normal here and I am grateful. We expect scholars to discourage peers from getting into altercations and to seek help from adults.
All our culture expectations are important (positive language/no cursing, dress codes, no horseplay, respect for peers and adults, etc.). Sometimes a parent gets upset because they believe we focus too much on small things. But we focus on seemingly “small things” because it helps us set a higher standard to prevent the “big things” (like UFC style fights in school). The Bible tells us it is the “little foxes that spoil the vines.” Small things matter. We thank you for your support as we try to create a safe and supportive culture and develop young men and women of character and integrity.
Updates
Picture Day – Picture Day for all scholars will be held on March 28th. More information on packages will be coming soon from Life Touch (the photographer).
Moot Court Results – On Friday, March 4th the Genesis Innovation Academy Middle School and High School Moot Court Teams represented the school exceptionally well during the Young Litigators Project (YLP) Moot Court Competition. The Middle School Team earned a clean sweep of awards; Best Overall Team, Best Brief, and Solomon Nixon was awarded Best Advocator. The high school team was well-prepared but lost out in a tough competition. We celebrate all our Moot Court scholars for their hard work and dedication throughout the year!
Basketball Results – Congratulations to both our 3rd-4th grade and our 5th-6th grade basketball teams for winning 2nd place in their league basketball tournaments! Both teams lost to tough opponents in the finals. Our middle school and high school teams lost in the playoffs, but each were shorthanded due to injuries. But they exemplified perseverance by continuing to put forth best effort in the face of challenges. Thank you to all of our scholar-athletes, coaches, and parents for their hard work and commitment throughout the season.
Asynchronous and Teacher Planning Days (Reminder) - Remember that we have added an asynchronous day on Friday, March 18th. Scholars will work from home on that day. Also, keep in mind that Monday, March 21st is a teacher planning day. There will be no school on the 21st.
Awnings – Genesis contracted with a company some time ago to replace all the awnings, but their work has been slowed by supply chain issues. They recently started the replacement process. They will also be installing a covering over the walkway to the modular units, extending the awnings on the Boys building to cover the walkway all the way to the cafeteria, and installing vinyl curtains to enclose the courtyard patio. We thank you for your patience while the work is being done.
Tutoring (Reminder) – Genesis is offering small-group and one-on-one tutoring for scholars in need of additional support. Some of the support is offered by Genesis teachers. Genesis has also contracted with a tutoring service. If your scholar has not been invited to participate in tutorial and you feel the support is needed, please reach out to Mr. Lovett at elovett@giacaedemy.org. Slots are opened for scholars most in need.

Parents should expect details about expectations by the Wednesday prior to each asynchronous day.
A more complete Genesis update will be sent early next week.
Thank you all and have a great weekend!
Dear Genesis Family,
Empathy is our value for the month of February. All of us should work hard to practice it. Stephen Covey reminds us that we should first seek to understand, then to be understood. As educators we want to think about what scholars feel like in our classrooms. Do they feel supported, engaged, and believed in. Do we recognize how hard it is for a parent to trust someone else to take care of their child and how we can better build that trust? As parents can we imagine what it is like for a teacher to figure out the unique approach that works for twenty children at once, when as parents we often have a hard time figuring out what works for just the one or two (etc.) we have in our house. We all have a role to play and each of them is a challenge. Before we fuss, cuss, demean, diminish, or argue, let us try on the other person’s shoes. We may still need to address some things, but maybe we would do it differently.
Intent-to-Return (Reminder) – All families who wish for their currently enrolled scholar to return to Genesis next year must fill out an Intent-to-Return form to hold a seat for that scholar. One form must be filled out for each scholar. If you do not fill out the form, your scholar will lose their slot to a scholar that is applying for admission to Genesis. Intent-to-Return forms will be uploaded to your Power School parent portal on February 4. Click “Forms” to access the form. The forms are due by February 18th. You may find additional information on the Returning Families page on the website.
Open Enrollment (Reminder) – Open enrollment has begun for any scholars that will be new to Genesis. Keep in mind that if you have a child at home that is not already enrolled at Genesis you must fill out an application for that scholar if you want them to attend. Feel free to spread the word to interested family and friends.
Asynchronous Learning Week (Reminder) – February 21-25 is asynchronous learning week. If you have questions or concerns prior to receiving more information, please reach out to your scholar’s teacher(s) or the appropriate School Director:
- Elementary School (K-5): Ms. Renetta Dees (rdees@giacademy.org)
- Middle School (6-8): Dr. Crystal LaVoulle (clavoulle@giacademy.org)
- High School: Mr. Tracy Dubose (tdubose@giacademy.org)
Car Lane Interaction – Unfortunately, we are getting reports that some parents are aggressively confronting staff members in the car lane. Please be aware that schools can ban parents from campus if they behave inappropriately around children and/or toward staff members. We try to get parents through the car lane as quickly as possible and always ask for your patience. The team is doing the best it can. To help things go more smoothly, please remember to arrive for second dismissal after 3:30 p.m. Also, if your scholar is in Global Tech for after care, please do not pick them up prior to 4:30 p.m. (when second dismissal ends). In addition, parents should not park in the car lane and exit their car to enter the campus/building.

Dear Genesis Family,
I hope this message finds you and yours doing well. I want to take a moment to commend our parents, faculty, staff, and administrators for the perseverance that has been shown by everyone all year long. COVID has presented several challenges, but it has also revealed how capable we are of facing and overcoming challenges. There will always be challenges, but we have shown that we will always respond. Our children will be better off as a result.
Please review the updates below:
Updates
Calendar Change: Make-up Days – In a prior e-mail it was mentioned that we needed to make-up lost days due to the first week of school being postponed. A survey was sent to parents and staff with several options. Based on the survey results and Board approval, the Winter Break scheduled for February 21-25 will now be an asynchronous learning week. Stay tuned for more details. If you have questions or concerns prior to receiving more information, please reach out to one of our School Directors:
- Elementary School (K-5): Ms. Renetta Dees (rdees@giacademy.org)

Slots are opened up for scholars most in need.
Attendance Check – Many parents are receiving attendance letters. Please do not panic! We are required by the state to send this kind of letter. We had not done so earlier because of the impact of COVID on attendance. What is most important now is for parents to help us account for absences (including COVID-related ones) as accurately as possible. Some of you may have sent information about absences before but we may need your help in making sure those notices are sent to the right place. We will work with you to get it right. If you believe an absence was entered in error (i.e., your scholar was present on that day), feel free to e-mail your scholar’s homeroom teacher (and copy info@giacademy.org. If you believe your scholar’s absence should be excused, send any notices or documentation to info@giacademy.org with the subject “Attendance Documentation.”

Have a great rest of your week!
Dear Genesis Family,
I hope this message finds you and your family well. It looks like there is some real hope that COVID-19 will soon be a minor concern. We have tried to do our best to emphasize health and safety. We have probably provided more testing than any other school or district. We have required masks and temperature checks since we returned to in-person learning. We still contact trace and quarantine close contacts. All our classrooms have air purifiers. And at the beginning of the pandemic, we went all-virtual right away with on-site learning pods to maximize health and safety. We will continue to keep health and safety at the forefront.
We appreciate all that our faculty and staff have done to make the learning environment productive for our scholars, despite the pandemic. We also thank our parents for putting in so much effort at home in support of what we are doing. We are not done with COVID just yet, but we are confident that, despite the pandemic, we will guide our scholars to success – together.
Updates below:
Intent-to-Return – All families who wish for their currently enrolled scholar to return to Genesis next year must fill out an Intent-to-Return form to hold a seat for that scholar. One form must be filled out for each scholar. If you do not fill out the form, your scholar will lose their slot to a scholar that is applying for admission to Genesis. Intent-to-Return forms will be e-mailed to all families on February 4th and will be due by February 18th. You may find additional information on the Returning Families page on the website.
Open Enrollment – Open enrollment has begun for any scholars that will be new to Genesis. Keep in mind that if you have a child at home that is not already enrolled at Genesis, you must fill out an application for that scholar if you want them to attend. Feel free to spread the word to interested family and friends.
Calendar - As you may recall, last fall Genesis delayed opening a week due to COVID concerns. The state of Georgia requires that we still offer 180 instructional days. We have listed some options for parents to choose from on the FY22 Calendar Survey. Please fill out the survey at your earliest convenience. We will consider responses from all stakeholders. Please click the link to fill out the survey: Parent Calendar Survey
ESSR Funds – Genesis received ESSR funds (e.g., CARES Act funds) last year from the federal government for COVID relief. A survey was sent to parents to get feedback on preferences for how the funds should be spent. The survey results and the current budgets are posted to our website HERE.
Free Testing Kits – The federal government is offering free at-home COVID tests. Find ordering information HERE.
COVID Update
As noted, we have continued to test each week. Below is the update on COVID numbers from testing, as well as self-reports from those who tested outside of Genesis. The increased numbers since December reflect how quickly the Omicron variant spread. The low numbers from last week, hopefully indicate infection rates might be slowing down.

As always, we wish you and your family health and blessings!
Dear Genesis Family,
As always, I hope you and your family are safe and well.
We have consulted with the Board of Health (BOH) and were informed that cases in Fulton County were still going up. Cases are higher than at any time during the pandemic. They are advising that we use testing results to guide our decision-making.
Though most districts have returned, or are returning on Monday, Genesis has decided to take an additional day and re-open on Tuesday, January 11. We want to get all the results from today’s (January 6) testing. Those results may not be final until Monday (testing companies are taking longer to return results).
Waiting an additional day for results will help ensure we are not returning to a situation that would cause a surge of additional cases within our building. Waiting for the test results would also help us make sure we have adequate staff to manage a safe and productive in-person learning environment.
We are being cautious not fearful. We understand that the pandemic will be with us for a while, and we must be diligent in following protocols to keep scholars and staff safe and healthy, and our doors open. We are trying to manage the “holiday surge” with the best information possible. We need an additional day to get that information. We believe it is the right decision in this moment.
Parents may bring scholars to campus for free COVID testing on Monday between 8:30 a.m. and 11:30 a.m. Since that means some scholars will be traveling during school hours, Monday will be an asynchronous instructional day. Teachers should be forwarding information soon.
Barring the unexpected, we will be back to our new normal on Tuesday. If we do not see you this coming Monday for testing, we hope to see you this coming Tuesday when you drop your scholars off.
Happy New Year Genesis Family,
As a reminder, I am resending the update from last week that we are virtual next week.
For those looking for a COVID testing option for scholars, we will be sending a notice out early next week about regular Thursday testing at Genesis.
Remember to send any questions to info@giacademy.org.
Hope you have a great New Year’s weekend!

Subject: Head of Schools Update: 12.21.21 - Return in January
Dear Genesis Family,
I am sending this update to inform you that, out of an abundance of caution, we will start the New Year with a virtual learning model. We expect to be virtual for the first week. We expect to be back in-person the following week but will continue to monitor COVID data and updates.
All scholars will be expected to log-on to their first class on Tuesday, January 4, 2022 @ 8:00 a.m. Because our faculty and staff are off until January 3, 2022, we will not be able to send you final updates about the instructional day for your scholar(s) until that first Monday. In general, you should expect a modified schedule.
Dual Enrollment scholars and scholar-athletes will receive separate communications about their schedules and requirements.
We know this decision may create challenges for some of our families. But given how quickly the Omicron variant is spreading (and given how COVID-19 cases have surged after every holiday/vacation break) it seemed wise to keep our scholars virtual to minimize the risk of spreading the virus upon our return.
We will continue to offer free testing on-site for scholars. If you have not done so, but wish to add your scholar to the list, please fill out this form: COVID Test Consent Form. Look for more information about possible scholar testing during the first week in January.
We do not take this virus lightly or how it has affected all of us. There is a lot of uncertainty about what we should specifically do in every situation. We thank you for your patience and understanding as we attempt to do the best we can with the information and consultation that is being made available to us. The advisories continue to emphasize vaccines and boosters to protect yourself, masking to best protect others, and social distancing to protect everyone.
Again, if there is more guidance from the CDC or health professionals that are advising us, we will update you. If you have any questions, please e-mail info@giacademy.org and we will address them as soon as we can (Note: the staff is on break until the new year).
My great hope, no matter what else is going on in the world, is that each of you and your families stay safe and have a blessed holiday season!

Dear Genesis Family,
As noted in my last communication, we would review results from Monday’s COVID testing on today. Those results have indicated additional staff members testing positive, which has led to more staff needing to quarantine. We have had one additional scholar test positive.
The additional staff shortage is what still concerns me the most. Without sufficient staff we are left scrambling to attend to children properly. Quality instruction suffers, classroom/behavior management suffers, and our ability to manage COVID protocols suffers.
I have consulted again with the Fulton County Board of Health. That conversation confirmed that now is a good time to suspend in-person learning and move to remote learning for the next two days. Teachers will communicate expectations about the next two days as quickly as possible.
Given we are two days short of the semester, most of our instruction and assessment should wrap up today. If there are any issues or concerns about assignments and assessments, teachers and instructional leadership will work that out with those families and scholars. Information about basketball schedules and protocols will be communicated separately to those parents.
After having so few cases for so long, these past two days have been challenging to say the least. But it is a reminder that COVID-19 is no joke and is probably going to be with us a while longer. In fact, cases are starting to rise all over. It is a reminder to stay diligent on following protocols. It may make some think about getting vaccines and/or boosters for themselves and/or their children. But it is certainly going to require us to think more carefully about how to operate in this environment. We will regroup and revise our strategies and update all of you accordingly.
Look for more information soon about how we expect to return safely back to school after the holiday break.
We wish you a safe and healthy holiday season!
Dear Genesis Family,
Since Thanksgiving break, we have been seeing more COVID-19 cases than we had become used to. This past week continued that trend. We consulted extensively with the Fulton County Board of Health (FCBOH). We were reassured that our practice of quarantining classes after a second positive case was definitely a safe practice, especially since we mandate masks and keep scholars separated by class as additional steps. Based on conversations with the FCBOH, our case count does not indicate a need to do more than our current practice of quarantining close contacts and classes with more than one case. But we will remain diligent and are prepared to take additional actions based on data and the advice of experts.
As our K-2 parents are aware, we made the decision last evening to quarantine the entire K-2. The decision was based more on a staffing shortage due to the number of K-2 teachers who must quarantine due to close contact with an infected person.
The most recent numbers are below:

Twelve (12) of the scholar cases come from classes/grades that we quarantined when they had only two (2) positive cases: 3rd grade girls (which now have 6 cases); 1st grade boys (now have 4 cases); and K boys (2 cases).
We will be receiving more results on tomorrow from our Monday testing. This picture could change and require us to take additional measures. We will continue to consult with the Board of Health and, as noted above, do our best to let the data and the experts guide our decision-making process.
Respectfully,
Dear Genesis Family,
I hope that this message finds you well. As we head into the end of the semester, there are a couple of important updates to keep in mind.
Parent Conferences/Remote Learning Day
Remember that this Friday, December 10, is a Parent Conference Day and Student Remote Learning Day (campus will be closed). Please look for information from your scholar’s teacher(s). If you have questions/concerns reach out to teachers or, if need be, the school Directors.
- Elementary – Ms. Renetta Dees: rdees@giacademy.org
- Middle School – Dr. Crystal LaVoulle: clavoulle@giacademy.org
- High School – Mr. Tracy Dubose: tdubose@giacademy.org
Grades
Please check your scholar’s grades as we head to the end of the semester. Use Canvas if your scholar is in grades 3-8 (use Power School if your scholar is in grades K-2). There is no time like the present to ask questions if there are concerns. See attached Parent Canvas Access instructions.
Dress Code
Thank you to all families who are supporting the Genesis dress code. It is important. Our value of the month is nobility which is basically a term about character and integrity. It is hard to instill character in scholars if parents sometimes make it seem like the dress code (or other rules) can be broken, just because. Part of character and integrity is doing what we say we are going to do. All of us with enrolled scholars signed off on the dress code. Help us, help our scholars walk with integrity. If you have questions about the dress code, or how we handle scholars being out of compliance, please reach out to your scholar’s Dean of Students (Ms. Rice or Mr. Lovett)
Arrival/Dismissal Parking
A message was sent to parents Monday of this week about parking in neighborhoods during drop-off and dismissal. Please keep in mind that if you block driveways and streets, homeowners will have no choice but to have your car booted or towed. The police officers who are here during arrival and dismissal may ask you to move your car. Even though you may not want to wait in the dismissal or drop-off line, we expect all of our parents to respect the homeowners in the neighborhood (as I am sure you would want to be respected).

We have continued to test each week. Staff tested twice last week after we returned from the break. We are grateful that we did not have any reported infections last week (we have had additional positive tests this week). We ask everyone to remain diligent as the new Omicron variant is circulating and it is still unclear how dangerous it might become.

Dear Genesis Family,
We are sending a flyer from Chessology about a competitive level, after school chess class. Chessology comes highly recommended from several of our parents and scholars. (Some of you may remember him from online classes at the end of last school year).
We hope this is the beginning of a chess culture at Genesis in which all our scholars learn how to think strategically through chess. We also hope to involve our chess-playing parents. But we are starting small, with two fee-based classes: one for grades K-4 and one for grades 5-10. The chess-master/coach will also identify the top players for the Genesis chess team, which we hope will begin to compete in the Spring.
If you have a serious chess player in your home, please consider registering. If you have a scholar who is extremely interested in chess and willing to work hard to get better, this may also be a great opportunity.
Please review the flyer by clicking the link here Genesis-Chessology Flyer and register by this Friday, December 3, 2021, using the directions on flyer. Our first class will begin next Monday.
If you have questions, please reach out directly to Chessology at the number on the flyer or e-mail your Dean of Students.
Sincerely,
Gavin Samms, Ph.D. // Head of Schools & CEO
Dear Genesis Parents,
Please be advised that scholars should NOT be dropped off on Custer Avenue during morning arrival.
Yesterday, a young Genesis scholar was dropped off on Custer Avenue during morning arrival. The scholar was let out into traffic. While trying to cross the street, the scholar was bumped by another car. The scholar was not seriously hurt but the outcome could have been much worse.
Parents should drop scholars off in the car line to maximize safety. Police officers are on Custer to direct the flow of traffic and we staff the car lane to make every effort to get cars through the line in a timely manner. But safety must be a bigger priority than speed. Dropping scholars off in traffic on Custer Avenue is anything but safe.
To maximize safety, police officers will now stop parents from parking on the sidewalk. We also ask that you do not park on adjacent side streets and have your scholars walk up during morning arrival. Car lane drop off is important both for traffic safety and for following COVID protocols.
We appreciate your support in following these safety procedures.
Dear Parents,
This month our GENESIS POWER value is Gratitude. We will be reinforcing that value with out scholars. But given the last year and a half of challenges, hopefully we, as adults, can find a moment to focus on the same thing. It is easy to find a reason to be negative or to complain but let us at least take this month (hopefully more) to show our children that there is always something to be grateful and thankful for. It is human nature to focus on what we want but do not have. Our children our experts at it. Let us all try to reverse that mindset by the example we set for them. We sometimes think the gifts we can buy them are the most important things we give them. Usually, the most important thing we can give them is the example of how to live. Being grateful is a good start.
Donuts for Teachers
I missed this e-mail earlier, but the State Charter School Foundation (SCSF) has extended the deadline on “Donuts for Teachers.” Please purchase "digital dozen" donut certificates for teachers and/or for yourself at the State Charter School Foundation (SCSF) website: Please click HERE to purchase. If you can purchase today that would be great! Donuts go to teachers and proceeds go the Foundation, which supports state charter schools throughout Georgia.
COVID Update
Case numbers continue to go down, which is great. But we must keep in mind that infections of all kinds tend to go up when the weather gets colder. This is the season to stock up on chicken soup and to think about getting the flu vaccine. In addition, COVID vaccines are now available for all school-aged children, at parents’ discretion. Genesis will continue its weekly scheduled testing program as well as testing of “close contacts” (as needed). Remember that vaccinated persons are less likely to get COVID, and less likely to get really sick or spread it if they do get the virus. Plus, vaccinated individuals do not have to quarantine if they are exposed to an infected person (unless they show symptoms).

Books
I want to stress how important it is for parents to emphasize reading as a habit. I continue to ask scholars about having a book with them only to have them say “I forgot.” Reading skills can be improved at school, but reading habits are created at home.
Academic Progress
Please continue to check on your scholar’s progress. Do not wait for a report to come from the school. Grades are posted electronically to give you real-time access. That means you can get a report at any time. If the report does not seem correct, you have time to work with your scholar’s teacher(s) to get it corrected. If you find out your scholar is not turning in work or is struggling with the work, you have time to seek assistance.
Thank you for your continued support!
Dear Parents,
Hope all is well with you and your family. We continue to ask for your support and patience as we strive to educate our scholars during the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. It is still affecting so many of our families and our staff. It requires us to be supportive and compassionate on the one hand and to work continuously on alternate plans to address the concerns and issues that a pandemic creates. We want you to be confident that we are committed to doing our very best for our scholars despite the circumstances.
A couple of quick updates:
Accreditation – The Genesis High School has recently been formally accredited for 9th and 10th grade by the Georgia Accrediting Commission (GAC). Genesis was already accredited by GAC for grades K-8.
Search for New Building – Genesis is still actively pursuing other properties to house our High School and to create additional space for K-8 on our current site. We have identified a location and are in negotiations. We will keep you updated and ask for you to keep praying for a resolution.
Uniform Sale – Genesis will be having a gently used uniform sale on Tuesday, November 2, 2021, from 2 pm to 5 pm at Haitian Ministry Theophile Church In Christ Inc. - 930 Custer Ave SE, Atlanta, GA 30316. If you plan to purchase uniform items, please be sure to set up your MyPayments Plus account by clicking here.
Parent Engagement Policy – The Parent Engagement Policy will be posted to the policy page on our website and can be downloaded by clicking here . Please look for additional communication on how Genesis will help parents support the education of their scholars during the remainder of this academic year.
Be safe, be healthy, be blessed!
Dear Genesis Parents,
I first wanted to say thank you for allowing us to educate and mentor your children. No school is perfect, no child is perfect. But overall, the scholars have carried themselves well. Some of that is the result of how our teachers and staff work with them each day (so please send a thank you or shout out to our teachers every now and then). But we also know that scholars are “good” because of good parenting. So, thank you again for raising good kids and know that we are in this with you to help them stay that way and get even better.
A few updates are below:
Remote Learning Day
Reminder that Genesis has scheduled a remote learning day for Friday, October 29. Please reach out to your scholar’s homeroom teacher or your School Director if you have any questions about work expectations for that day.
Title I
Genesis will be holding a virtual Title 1 meeting on Tuesday, November 2. To accommodate parent schedules, there are two sessions: one at 12 noon and one at 5 p.m. Please choose to attend the session that best fits your schedule. All parents should have received a flyer. Please attend to learn more about how Genesis plans to engage parents in the successful education of their scholars. A zoom link will be sent prior to the meeting.
Progress Reports
Parents will receive progress reports this week for first-quarter grades. All parents should keep in mind that the reports are pulling grades from Canvas. Parents should not wait until progress reports are sent to review scholar grades. Parents always have access to grade information, which allows concerns to be addressed as they arise. If you have questions about grades, or if you think there is an error, please reach out to teachers first and Directors second. Note: High School parents will receive report cards this week for the first semester. Because Genesis is using block scheduling, the first quarter represents a full semester. The report card grades are therefore final semester grades, not progress report grades. Parents should reach out to teachers or Mr. DuBose with any questions or concerns.
Detention/Saturday Work Detail
Some scholars have subpar grades because they are not completing classwork due to lack of effort. Parents should be aware that teachers are instructed to pull scholars for lunch detention or after school detention to complete unfinished assignments. Parents will be informed about after school detention the day it is required. Scholars who consistently and deliberately fail to complete work will be referred to Saturday Work Detail. Our goal is not punishment. We want to reinforce the value of work ethic.
Tutoring
Some scholars are working hard but are not performing well because they need support. Genesis offers tutoring for those scholars. Some tutoring has already begun in a few grades. Parents should look for more information soon about additional tutoring opportunities.
Weather Update
As the temperature begins to cool, we want our families to keep a few things in mind:
- Uniform/Dress – Make sure your scholars are dressed appropriately to stay warm when outside. Keep in mind that when scholars are inside the building, they can only wear approved Genesis outerwear. Any parent or scholar who is concerned about being cold inside the building should review the dress code in the handbook for approved options or reach out to their Dean of Students. Please stay tuned for more information about another uniform sale.
- Symptoms of Illness – Cold weather usually leads to an increase in illness. Please make sure to monitor your scholar at night and each morning for symptoms that indicate they could be sick. If you notice symptoms, please keep your scholar home. COVID is not the only illness to be concerned about. Scholars can catch the flu, strep throat, the common cold, etc., and spread those to others. Let us work together to minimize that. We should all be prepared as much as possible for scholars becoming ill and needing to stay at home during the winter season.
COVID Update
COVID is a specific and ongoing concern. We continue to encourage parents to sign their scholars up for regular testing by using the link to fill out the COVID Consent Form. We also encourage parents to have their scholars 12 years and older vaccinated. Vaccinated scholars are less likely to get COVID, and less likely to get really sick or spread it if they do get the virus. Plus, vaccinated scholars do not have to quarantine if they are exposed to an infected person (unless they show symptoms).

The rise in recent cases is likely due to traveling or being less diligent about following recommended protocols during and after the Fall break. Whether at school or away, we are asking everyone to be vigilant about following protocols. Future updates will include plans to reduce risk after Thanksgiving and Christmas breaks (e.g., quarantines, weekend testing, etc.)
Mask Wearing and Consequences
As noted above, we are stressing mask wearing even more. There are reports of scholars deciding they do not have to wear their masks. Continued lack of mask wearing will be treated as a behavior/discipline issue and parents will be contacted for additional support. Please have a conversation with your scholar about the importance of mask wearing.
Books
Remember to send your scholar with a book each day. Reading is a habit that improves fluency, knowledge, and comprehension. Please note that not having a book will be incorporated into our culture point system and could affect a scholar’s ability to participate in extra-curricular activities.
Spirit Week/Dress Down Days
Genesis Spirit Week will begin this Monday. It was developed by some of our high school student leaders to provide a fun activity that supports the Genesis culture. It is important for parents to know that scholars earn the right to dress down during Spirit Week (or on any future dress down days). It is also important to note that scholars are being rewarded (those who do not dress down are simply not being rewarded; they are not being punished). Following the dress code, along with overall behavior, is an important component of earning dress down privileges.
Thank you for your continued support!
Dear Parents,
We hope you and your scholars had a great fall break. As you prepare your scholars to return to school on tomorrow, please review the updates below:
COVID-Testing
Although we have been blessed with relatively low number of COVID infections at Genesis, the virus is still spreading. We must still take precautions. Based on Board of Health recommendations it is expected that individuals get tested if they traveled by train, bus, or plane over the break. Remember, Genesis offers scholars an opportunity to get tested at school as part of a Board of Health program. If you have not signed up your scholar for testing already, you may do so here: COVID Testing Consent. In addition, if your scholar is not vaccinated, and you have reason to believe your scholar may have been exposed to COVID-19 positive persons or spent time around large groups without wearing a mask, it is expected that your scholar quarantine at home in addition to getting tested. Genesis conducts Covid testing for scholars every Monday.
Survey: CARES Act Funds
All public-school districts have received CARES Act funds from the government to help manage the COVID-19 crisis. Genesis has used some of those funds for emergency concerns. However, decisions are still being made on the use of a major portion of the funds. We want to get your feedback to help us guide our decision making. Please fill out this brief CARES Allocation Survey and give us your input.
Reminder: Canvas
As a reminder, if your scholar is in grades 3 and up, please make sure you have access to the Canvas platform to get the best information on assignments and grades. Chick here for the guide showing parents how to access Canvas. Please reach out to techsupport@giacademy.org if you have technical difficulties. Reach out to your scholar’s teacher with questions about assignments, or administration if you cannot reach a teacher.
Reminder: Parking in the Neighborhood
As a reminder, please do not block driveways or park in a way that prevents other cars from passing on the street. Neighbors are expressing their concern that they cannot leave their neighborhoods, especially during arrival and dismissal. They will begin towing/booting cars if this continues.
Reminder: Uniforms
Please be sure to put your scholar’s name on their uniform and school supply items. They do lose or misplace items often and it is easier to get items returned if they are labeled. All scholars should be in full uniform as per the dress code. If you have issues with uniforms, please reach out to your Academy Dean of Students, Ms. Rice (trice@giacademy.org) or Mr. Lovett (elovett@giacademy.org).
Reminder: Healthy Food/Snacks
As per our Handbook, please do not expect/allow your scholar to eat junk food while on the Genesis campus. The expectation is to promote health and wellness. There are occasions when “treats” are allowed but it should not be considered a regular practice.
Thank you and we look forward to welcoming your scholars back this week.
Dear Genesis Family,
First, let me say that all of us who are a part of Team Genesis are grateful for the opportunity to work with your scholars. During a pandemic, it is understandable that we must talk about and think about how to work through challenges. It can sometimes feel like a lot of negative. But your scholars are certainly a positive. No child is perfect, and we still must work on helping many of them mature into thoughtful and disciplined scholars. And yes, we sometimes get tired and frustrated. However, we all became educators to teach and interact with kids. I have heard several of our teachers say how great it is to be reminded of the impact they can have when they get to teach children in-person. I am personally energized by how often so many of our scholars go out of their way to say hello or good morning with a smile on their face. Yes, we will enjoy this Fall break, but we will also gladly welcome your scholars back when they return.
Updates below
Fall Break
Reminder: We will return from Fall Break on Monday, October 11.
Curriculum Night
We have just completed this year’s Curriculum Night presentations. Curriculum Night is not the only time parents should reach out to teachers. If you still have questions about curriculum and instruction, please connect with your scholar’s teacher(s). As noted during each presentation, if you cannot reach a teacher, please reach out to the School Director. If that does not work, please reach out to me through e-mail or the front desk.
Canvas vs. Power School
I realized I misspoke during the middle school Curriculum Night presentation and wanted to clarify. Canvas (not Power School) is the platform that parents of scholars in grades 3 and up should be viewing to get the most complete information about assignments. (Note: Canvas does synch grades and assignment titles to Power School, but not full information about assignments). K-2 teachers are primarily using Power School and will communicate with parents if that strategy changes. Again, reach out if you have concerns (teacher, then Director, then Head of Schools). Chick here for the guide showing parents how to access Canvas.
Grade Check
Please check grades over the break. We have essentially completed one quarter. Progress Reports will go out shortly after we return from the break. If you have a high school scholar, they have almost completed the equivalent of one semester because they are on a block schedule. Please be proactive and reach out if you have questions.
Parking in the Neighborhood
Several parents are parking in the neighborhood and walking up to drop scholars off in the morning or to pick them up at dismissal. Keep in mind that you cannot block driveways or make it impossible for cars to pass because parked cars are on both sides of the street. Our neighbors have not complained much about anything, but this is apparently becoming a problem. Please be mindful. The next step would likely be having cars booted and/or towed.
Uniforms
Please be sure to put your scholar’s name on their uniform and school supply items. They do lose or misplace items often and it is easier to get items returned if they are labeled. All scholars should be in full uniform as per the dress code. If you have issues with uniforms, please reach out to your Academy Dean of Students, Ms. Rice (trice@giacademy.org) or Mr. Lovett (elovett@giacademy.org).
COVID-19 Update
We have gone through two weeks of regular weekly testing. We test over 200 scholars each Monday and our staff on Thursdays (and sometimes on Monday as well). We are not able to test scholars unless we have parental consent. If you would like to add your scholar to the testing list, please fill out the Covid Testing Consent form. (This form is also on the Parent Page of the Website) The virus is still out there, and we must remain diligent, particularly as the weather changes. Thank you for sending your scholars with masks each day! Thank you for keeping ill scholars at home!

Healthy Food/Snacks
One of the expectations at Genesis is that scholars eat healthy. As we continue to rebuild the in-person culture that we want, we will begin to focus on this when we return from the break. Please refer to the Handbook if you are not familiar with the expectations. One major focus of the policy: please do not expect/allow your scholar to each junk food while on the Genesis campus.
Have a great break!
Hello Parents,
Please review the following letter regarding our Fall Write Score assessment scheduled on September 28th & 29th.
Write.Score.PL.Sept.Grades3thru10.pdf
Thank You,
GIA Testing Admin
Dear Genesis Family,
I wanted to send a quick update about COVID Testing. There was a miscommunication with the testing company about the testing dates. We expected them on Tuesday but they arrived this morning (Monday) with a full team.
The testing company completed the first round of testing today. Scholars should have been tested if a parent filled out the COVID Test Consent Form and indicated their consent (the original form was sent on August 25th, and has been included on each Head of Schools Update). If there are questions about the consent please send them to the covid@giacademy.org e-mail, or reach out to the main office at 404-990-3844.
Until further notice, the main testing day for scholars will be each Monday. Thursday is the main day for staff, but can be used as an alternate day for scholars who need to be tested on that day.
Please view this video about Mako Medical, the testing company, to learn more about their process. You can also learn more about the partnership between Mako Medical and the Georgia Department of Health that allows us to conduct this testing at this website.
We will likely be testing through the Winter season to monitor any possible outbreaks that could occur. This is a major and necessary undertaking for a school. We ask for your continued patience as we make this process better over time.
Respectfully,
Gavin Samms, Ph.D. // Head of Schools & CEO
Dear Genesis Family,
I regret to inform you that we recently lost a Genesis parent after a long fight against the COVID-19 virus. The parent was a mother of three Genesis children. She also lived with her sister, who happens to be the mother of four Genesis children. At this moment, seven Genesis children have had their world turned completely upside down. We are doing all we can as a Genesis community to support this family, but there is of course no way to make up for their great loss.
Please take care of yourselves. We really do not want another announcement of any member of the Genesis family losing their life to this virus. Your children need you healthy and whole. Of course, we are all concerned about our young children, but the truth is adults are more likely to have serious illness (or worse) due to a COVID infection. There are religious and medical concerns that I understand. But if you are more concerned about the vaccine than the virus, note that the virus has killed 4.5 million people worldwide. In the U.S. the number is over 600,000 deaths and almost 3 million hospitalizations. The virus is winning.

COVID Testing
Regular COVID testing is set to begin on Tuesday. If you filled out the COVID Consent Form for your scholar(s), we will arrange to have them tested regularly beginning this week. Additional information is forthcoming.
Sending Sick Scholars to School
We have recently had a couple of families bring ill children to school. We do understand that sometimes parents believe that scholars are not “really” sick or can push through. However, it is not acceptable to knowingly drop off a child with COVID symptoms (whether the scholar has COVID or not).
Our safety protocols including car line temperature checks and teacher/staff diligence helped to protect others by identifying these scholars before others could be affected. Parents should expect a follow-up call from the Genesis Social Worker if a child is dropped off with obvious symptoms.
Other Updates
- Curriculum Night – Please prepare to join us virtually for Curriculum Night the week of September 27, 2021. This is an opportunity to learn more about the academic expectations of your scholar’s teachers and how you can help your scholar succeed.
- School Messenger – Please take the time to opt-in to School Messenger so that you can receive notifications by text message to your phone. The linked flyer has instructions on how to set it up.
- Books – Every Genesis scholar must bring a book (or books) to school with them. We want to build a culture of reading that does not rely only on reading instruction. We expect all scholars to read on their own and parents to read to scholars in K-2. Scholars should be prepared to read in the car, while waiting for class to begin in the morning, or when a teacher provides time for them to read a book of their choosing. Scholars without a book may lose points in our behavior tracking system.
- Remote Learning Days – Please remember to lock in the next two Remote Learning Days on this coming Friday, September 24 and October 29. Scholars will not come to campus on those days but will be expected to submit teacher provided assignments to verify attendance.
- Write-Score – Scholars will be taking Write-Score writing assessments over the next two weeks. This first assessment will provide teachers with a baseline to help identify what writing skills each scholar needs to work on. Look for more information on when your scholar’s grade will be taking the assessment.
Be safe, be healthy, be blessed, and have a great upcoming week!
Gavin Samms, Ph.D. // Head of Schools & CEO
Please be very mindful of this policy. Even though your child may not be allergic, others around them are. Some scholars can have severe reactions from simply being in a room with nut products.
Dear Genesis Parents,
Unfortunately, COVID infections continue to be a major concern for all schools. Many people are still skeptical about vaccines, largely because of a lack of trust (in the government, the science, the process, etc.). But we don’t seem to lack trust in other ways. Every day most of us put food or medicine in our bodies that contain chemicals we have never heard of that have serious side effects. We’ve all seen commercials for drugs that treat conditions such as diabetes, high blood pressure, ADHD, erectile dysfunction, depression, etc. Those commercials always list side effects that seem worse than the condition the drug is treating. But that does not stop most people from taking them. If there was a conspiracy, drug companies and the government would not need to use the vaccine. They have plenty of chances to inflict harm in all the other stuff we take every day. We all get to make the choice that is best for us and our family. So this is just a thought for your consideration, not a directive.
Please see updates below.
Remote Learning Day
We just completed our first remote learning day. Your scholar is expected to return all assignments completed when they return on Tuesday. If you have any questions, please reach out to your scholar’s teacher(s). If you need additional assistance, reach out to the appropriate Executive Director:
- Elementary (K-5) – Ms. Renetta Dees at rdees@giacademy.org
- Middle School (6-8) – Dr. Crystal LaVoulle at clavoulle@giacademy.org
- High School – Mr. Tracy DuBose at tdubose@giacademy.org
Schedules
All schedules have been finalized and posted to Power School. Parents will begin to see grades in the system. New parents will receive an e-mail about accessing Power School. Information about Power School is also on our Great Start page in the Power School section.
Car Line & 2nd Dismissal
As always, we thank our parents for their patience while waiting in the car lane. As a reminder to our parents who arrive for 2nd dismissal, please do not arrive before 3:30 p.m. We need time to finish the 1st dismissal. If you arrive before 3:30 p.m. you will be instructed by Genesis staff to use the far left lane or to circle around to allow 1st dismissal cars to pass through the line. We expect our families to follow the directions given by staff. An individual that refuses staff directives (or harasses staff as they give directions) may be required to make arrangements for other adults/services to pick up their child.
Uniform / Dress Code
As a reminder, all scholars are expected to be in full uniform when they return on tomorrow, Tuesday, September 7. Full uniform includes everything from socks to belts to shoes, as well as items that require the Genesis logo. Hopefully, parents were able to take advantage of the uniform sale this past Thursday. Parents will begin to receive notices of non-compliance about uniforms and should send questions or concerns about uniforms to our Deans:
- Girls Academy Dean – Ms. Taryn Rice at trice@giacademy.org
- Boys Academy Dean – Mr. Eddie Lovett at elovett@giacademy.org
The Genesis dress code is an important part of building the culture we want. After a year and a half out of the building, we ask for parents’ support in helping us rebuild and improve upon the culture we had established.
COVID Testing Consent
As a reminder, please fill out the COVID Testing Consent Form if you want your scholar to participate in regular weekly testing at Genesis. The testing will be conducted through the Department of Public Health. We ask that you fill out one for each scholar. We will update you when the program begins.
COVID and Labor Day Travel
If your scholar traveled by bus, plane, or train over the holiday weekend, we expect parents to follow CDC guidelines and have their scholar:
- Get tested within 3-5 days after travel
- Stay home and self-quarantine for a full 7 days after travel
Teachers will be able post work virtually for quarantining scholars.

Masking
Most of our parents are sending their scholars with masks. Thank you! We ask that parents keep spare masks in the car in case you or your scholar(s) forget to bring one. Also, please make sure the masks fit. If you have an elementary scholar, there are smaller masks that fit better. Lastly, we recommend N95 masks for the best protection.
We certainly hope everyone had a restful long weekend. Welcome Back!
Gavin Samms, Ph.D. // Head of Schools & CEO

Thank you for your continued support of Genesis Innovation Academy and we look forward to seeing you at the Gently Used Uniform Sale.
Best,
Dear Genesis Parents,
We need to inform you that we are closing the building down this Friday to facilitate COVID preparations. We do not have a lot of cases. However, there are things that need to be done to help us keep it that way. We need to do a deep clean of the building, install additional desk shields, install cameras in select classrooms to support scholars who do quarantine, rearrange some rooms to minimize close contact, and get additional training on contact tracing and other COVID protocols.
While we are working on that, scholars will be working remotely from home. Teachers will send home work that can be done without teacher support. Teachers will provide specific instructions to parents and scholars about when and how work is to be completed and submitted. Please note that submitted work is how attendance is taken for a remote learning day.
We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause but these are not normal times. Given the times, we are trying to be proactive and prepared for what will probably be another year of adjustments that are difficult to plan for.
Please reach out to your scholar(s)’ Executive Director with any questions you may have.
- Elementary – Ms. Renetta Dees (rdees@giacademy.org)
- Middle Grades (6-8) – Dr. Crystal LaVoulle (clavoulle@giacademy.org)
- High School – Mr. Tracy DuBose (tdubose@giacademy.org)
We appreciate your patience and understanding.

Dear Genesis Family,
We have completed two weeks and are pressing forward. The main challenge is still how we manage COVID-19 cases. This is a difficult situation for all. Since the beginning of the crisis it has been clear that the medical / public health establishment has struggled to provide us with clear and definitive guidance. Each family, school, and community is left to take the information given and do the best it can for those who they are responsible for. I wish it were not this way. But it is. We are all desperate to take care of our children’s physical health but in the process, we don’t want to diminish their emotional/social health and development or educational progress. We are all struggling with the right balance. One basic truth will not change – we will get through this better together.
Updates below:
Schedules
Schedules are being finalized. We are using additional data (not just this year’s MAP) to expedite the process. Please know that teachers are still teaching. They are not waiting on the schedules to be finalized. K-4 schedules are almost done. Returning high school and middle scholar schedules are also almost finalized (some new scholar schedules are being delayed because of incomplete records). This year’s MAP data may provide helpful information for some scholar schedules in 5-10.
Late Arrivals
Remember that scholars are technically late if they arrive at 8:01 a.m. We have been providing a grace period in the morning but that is getting shorter each day. There may be situations (e.g. a bad storm) that cause us to extend the time. But that should be rare. Please try to arrive by 7:45 a.m. to be safe. If the car line is reduced to one-lane, that means your scholar is tardy and we will process the tardy check-in from the car line. If no staff member is in the car line, be prepared to park and enter the office.
After Care
There may have been different instructions given to parents so we want to clarify. Parents of after-care scholars should inform Global Tech before 2 p.m. if they want to pick their scholar up from the car line during regular dismissal. Global Tech will then remove your scholar from the after-care list and will not pick the scholar from the class. Parents should use Global Tech’s Brigthwheel system to make any such changes. Parents should e-mail their scholar’s teacher as a back-up.
Fall Reopening Survey
We have had over 300 responses (we need more, we have over 500 families). If you have not responded please click on the Fall 2021 Reopening Survey link. The summary of responses:
- Over 80% of K-8 families prefer in-person learning (60% of high school families prefer in-person)
- However, about 60% of those who prefer in-person would prefer virtual if cases increase
- 60-70% of families state they have gotten (or will get) their scholars (12 years old and up) vaccinated
- 60% responded that they will consent to COVID testing.
This means it is important for us all to keep looking at the numbers. Again, if you have not responded to the survey, you can still do so: Fall 2021 Reopening Survey
Based on some of the comments we have received so far, I wanted to add a couple of additional reminders, comments, and updates:
COVID Testing Consent
The Fall 2021 Reopening survey asked a general question about consent for COVID testing. We now need parents to formally consent to testing for each of their children. This will help us prepare for the weekly testing sponsored by the Department of Health. That testing can begin as soon as next week. Please fill out the COVID Testing Consent Form. We ask that you fill out one for each scholar.
COVID Case Update
Case Update
CATEGORY | Total Positives this School Year
(As of the end of Last Week) |
Total Positives Last Week |
Scholars | 6 | 3 |
Staff | 5 | 2 |
In general, we have had some scholars and staff feel ill (due to various reasons), have symptoms, have contact with positive individuals (or individuals who were themselves in contact with a positive person). We’ve had a lot of individuals get tested. But relative to those numbers, we have not had a lot of cases.
COVID Reporting (to Genesis)
If parents or staff need to report cases (or anything related to COVID), please use the covid@giacademy.org e-mail. If you need immediate assistance try to reach a team member at 404-990-3844. Keep in mind that there are times of the day when the office staff is busy with calls and either morning or afternoon procedures.
COVID Notification (from Genesis)
Notification guidance from the Department of Public Health has been evolving. The current guidance suggests that we notify the following:
- A parent of a positive scholar
- A staff member who tests positive
- The close contacts of a person who tests positive
- The parents of scholars in a classroom of someone who tested positive
What may tell each contact something different, depending on the circumstances. What is important to note is that we will not be informing parents of a scholar who may have been near an infected scholar of another class. Again, we will inform close contacts (in the same class or not) and those in the classroom (close contact or not). This is slightly different than what we were doing previously.
Safety Precautions
- Scholars are in the same group in the same room (with rare exceptions) to minimize possible spread
- Please make sure your scholar has a mask that fits. An N95 mask provides the best protection.
- Outdoor transmission is very rare, but we still expect scholars to wear masks outdoors unless they are properly distanced.
- Thank you parents for sending water for your scholar (and their classmates). Hands-free water dispensers are still on hold due to supply chain delays.
Virtual Learning
There are many comments and questions about virtual learning. I have stated that we are unfortunately not staffed to provide both virtual and in-person instruction at the same time. Some districts (and one school that I am aware of) have separate virtual schools. There are also specialized virtual schools. But the majority of our parents want in-person learning and much of our effort has gone into making that model as safe and effective as possible.
It is important to note that virtual instruction is different than providing work through virtual platforms. We still intend to provide work assignments through on-line platforms (either asynchronously or to supplement in-class instruction). However, we are not planning to have a full schedule of virtual classes in which a teacher and the class are all on Zoom alongside a full in-person teaching schedule.
We are hoping to roll out an opportunity for sick/quarantined scholars to “Zoom” into the classroom. But as I noted that is not a true virtual instruction model (the teacher would be focused on those in the classroom while scholars will be observing from home with limited interaction).
We will consider going to a full virtual model if increasing COVID numbers indicate that to be the best strategy.
Thank you!
Gavin Samms, Ph.D. // Head of Schools & CEO
Dear Genesis Family,
We continue to ask for and thank you for your patience as we work through smoothing out various processes at the beginning of the school year. Teachers spent much of their time the first week on routines, culture, and assessments. That will continue this coming week, though instruction will be more rigorous as well. Also, we are refining our COVID-19 protocols to align with the most recent CDC guidelines (see below). We know that COVID-19 makes this is a difficult time for all of us. We apologize for any delays or problems that you experience as a result of the adjustments we have to make in these uncertain times. Nothing is normal but we will continue to press forward. There are several updates below that we need you to read through and ask questions about if needed.
COVID-19 Protocols Part 1: Parent Feedback – We are proceeding with in-person learning but are watching the numbers closely. If cases and hospitalizations increase among young people, returning to virtual learning is a serious consideration. Again, we are not there yet. We are proceeding with in-person learning but we want to get a better idea of parents’ opinions. I want to reassure you that we have used past survey data to guide our decisions – your opinion matters. We also need your response to whether you consent to have your scholar(s) tested for COVID at school. Please fill out the Fall 21 Reopening Parent Survey to help us better plan for our families.
COVID-19 Protocols Part 2: Masks – In general, we are pleased that our scholars are showing up with masks and a willingness to wear them. However, we do have some scholars showing up without masks. Please make sure your scholar has a mask. That is the best protection we have for our scholars and staff. We will provide a mask if a scholar does not have one, but we are not prepared to provide every scholar a mask every day as a regular practice. We appreciate your cooperation.
COVID-19 Protocols Part 3: Reporting / Contact Tracing – If a scholar (or any member of the scholar’s household) tests positive, please send an e-mail to covid@giacademy.org. Please include the scholar’s name, grade, and homeroom teacher (if known), and the scholar’s status (tested positive, in a home with a diagnosed person, etc.). A member of the Genesis team will follow up with the family, administration, and teachers on next steps. If your scholar is in close contact with a scholar who was diagnosed with COVID, we will reach out to you with next steps. In general, all families should be prepared to quarantine their scholar(s) in these situations and wait for further instructions. Please review the CDC definition of “Close Contact” (after clicking the link, scroll down to Appendix A - Glossary Section).
COVID-19 Protocols Part 4: Scholar Work – If your scholar has to quarantine for any period of time, please make sure you reach out to the homeroom teacher to help you get work assignments (and connect you to all of your scholar’s teachers). If you have difficulty connecting with teachers please reach out to our Executive Directors. Contact information is below.
- Elementary (K-5) – Ms. Renetta Dees (rdees@giacademy.org)
- Middle School (6-8) – Dr. Crystal LaVoulle (clavoulle@giacademy.org)
- High School (9 and up) – Mr. Tracy DuBose (tdubose@giacademy.org)
After-Care: Pick Up Changes – If your scholar is signed up to go to aftercare they will be sent there each day. If you need to make a change for a particular day you must communicate that to Global Tech and to the homeroom teacher. Please note that we are not able to dismiss scholars from after-care to the car line. Parents have to park and sign their scholar out of after-care (which is difficult during regular dismissal times, thus pick up from aftercare should occur after the second dismissal)
Car Lane Part I: Arrival – In general, morning arrival is going better and most of our families are arriving on time! Please be aware of the following to help the process go even better:
- Scholars are technically late if they get to their classroom at 8:01 a.m. or after
- Please prepare your scholars to leave the car quickly (get book bags and lunches together, seat belts unbuckled, etc.)
- Only let your scholars out of the car after a staff member checks their temperature (roll down windows, if possible).
- If you arrive after 8:00 a.m. and no staff member is in the car lane, you must escort your scholar into the building to sign them in.
- Please watch your speed in the car lane for everyone’s safety (by law, we have to report speeding to the authorities).
Car Lane Part 2: Dismissal – As a reminder, dismissal times are:
- Grades K-4 – Dismissal begins at 2:45 p.m. and ends at 3:30 p.m.
- Grades 5 and up – Dismissal begins at 3:45 p.m. and ends at 4:30 p.m.
Parents picking up for the first dismissal (grade K-4) should arrive between 2:30 p.m. and 3:00 p.m. Parents arriving for second dismissal (grade 5 and up) should arrive between 3:30 p.m. and 4:00 p.m.
Car Lane Part 3: Numbers/Cards – The Silent Dismissal Cards (with dismissal numbers) have been sent home with scholars and through e-mail. If you have not received your Silent Dismissal card/number, reach out to your Academy Dean:
- Girls Dean of Students: Ms. Taryn Rice (trices@giacademy.org)
- Boys Dean of Students: Mr. Eddie Lovett (elovett@giacademy.org)
Car Lane Part 4: Arrival and Departure Routes – We are asking parents to help us keep traffic moving with the following strategies:
- Approach/Arrive at Genesis from the west – Arrive at Genesis from the Boulevard end of Custer (whether you are coming in the morning or the afternoon) to minimize the traffic back up on Moreland.
- When leaving, turn left if possible – Those who travel south on Moreland toward I-285 may find it easier to turn left to Benteen, then go left to McDonough, then turn left again to Moreland.
- Turn left when directed to do so – If the traffic has backed up, the attending police officer or staff member may have to direct cars to turn left even if they prefer not to. We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause, and we will only ask when absolutely necessary.
Early Dismissal – Due to a need to keep traffic flowing during dismissal and because of limited parking, early dismissal pick-ups must occur before 2:15 p.m. This applies to all grades. We can not dismiss upper school scholars during the lower school dismissal.
Sibling Care – Genesis offers free “sibling care” to parents who have a scholar in grades K-4 AND a scholar in grades 5 and up. Scholars in sibling care will be allowed to wait with a designated teacher until the older sibling is released during second dismissal. K-4 parents must let their scholar’s homeroom teacher know if they will need sibling care. Any scholar who is not signed up for sibling care, and who is not picked up by 3:30 p.m., will be sent to the Global Tech after-care program as an emergency drop-in. There is a fee for Global Tech’s after-care service.
Uniforms – We are aware that some families are still waiting for uniform orders. Until you receive your uniform, scholars need to wear an all-white top (polo or collared shirt) and dark slacks/pants. Girls may also wear a dark skirt. Jeans are not an option. All scholars must be in full uniform by Labor Day. Also, keep in mind that our dress code does not allow scholars to have unnatural hair colors and that our boys/young men are not allowed to wear earrings. In addition, please pay close attention to shoe color, sock color, and belt requirements. Please see the Dress Code section in the Genesis Handbook or the website uniform page
MAP Testing and Schedules – MAP Testing is being delayed for a week to iron out some technical issues. MAP data is used primarily to assist teachers in identifying learning gaps. MAP data may affect schedules for certain grades. We will finalize those schedules that will not be affected by MAP data as soon as possible. Core instruction will proceed as normal without delay.
If you have questions, please direct them to info@giacademy.org or call 404-990-3844.
Thank you and have a great day and a blessed week!

GIA ADMIN
Subject: Head of Schools Update: 8.4.2021
Dear Genesis Family,
Thank you for your patience as we have taken this past week to revise our plans for reopening due to an identified COVID-19 case and the possibility of additional staff exposure. We can report that after testing our team, no additional cases were reported. However, the reality of a vaccinated staff member being symptomatic did require us to regroup.
We are committed to creating a safe and engaging educational environment for our scholars. We know that many parents are concerned about how things will work in a world with an ongoing and ever-changing pandemic. Please know that we will continue to be prepared to make changes as the situation around us changes.
Last year, we made decisions based on the feedback of our entire Genesis family (parents, faculty, and staff). We could not please everyone, but we made decisions that were different from those of surrounding districts because our families expressed different concerns. We will continue to listen to our families and our team as we move forward.
As we get closer to the opening of school, there are a few updates to consider:
Covid-19 Protocols – Click the link to review our reopening plan with COVID-19 protocols COVID Plan for Reopening_Fall 2021 (1).pdf. The plan includes provisions for an all-virtual learning model, but only if we find ourselves in that situation again. The current plan is to be fully in-person when we begin next week. Please note that the most important part of the plan is that everybody on campus will be wearing masks when they are indoors, as per CDC recommendations, to reduce the possibility of spread. If your scholar has underlying conditions, please reach out to Ms. Fagin at efagin@giacademy.org.
Open House – Open House was rescheduled for this Friday. Click here for Open House flyer: Open House 2021_Updated.pdf
Arrival – Regular drop-off begins at 7:15 am. (See the Great Start page for information about early morning care). Scholars will have their temperature checked before exiting the car. Parents will be expected to take their scholars home or get them medical attention if they have a high temperature. Parents are also expected to remain in their cars. Scholars will be escorted to designated areas by staff. Please be prepared to be patient as we work through this brand new process.
- Note: Parents of
K-1 scholars will receive information on a late arrival process that will allow them to walk their scholars into the building on a limited basis at the beginning of next week.
Parents in Building – Parents should not expect to enter the building unless directed to do so by staff. Parent visitation may be allowed at a later date once Genesis is more comfortable with new protocols. Every effort will be made to conduct parent meetings virtually.
We will make adjustments as needed.
Structure – Genesis is growing and revising its structure. Our Executive Directors have been assigned to manage school levels to hopefully make it easier for parents to get much needed information. Leaders and their school level assignments are listed below:
- Elementary (K-5) – Mrs.
Renetta Dees (rdees@giacademy.org) - Middle School (6-8) –
Dr. Crystal LaVoulle (clavoulle@giacademy.org) - High School (9+) – Mr.
Tracy DuBose (tdubose@giacademy.org)
Your primary contacts are still your scholar’s teachers (for instructional information) and our front desk/customer service specialist, Ms. Cazaubon (for general information). However, if you have any concerns or unanswered questions, feel free to reach out to the listed Executive Director that oversees your scholar’s grade.
Congratulations to Mr. Christian – Mr. Christian has accepted a new opportunity that will allow him to train school leaders in various districts across the country. We are grateful for his years of amazing service to the Genesis community and we offer our congratulations as he will begin to make an even bigger impact in education for children all over the country.
Scholars Eat for Free – Genesis is now a part of the Seamless Summer option under the National School Lunch Program. That means all of our scholars now receive free meals without each individual family having to qualify for the free meal program. If you have questions, please reach out to our Ms. Fagin at efagin@giacademy.org. Scholars also have the option to bring their own lunch.
Calendar Changes – Due to the one week delay to the start of school, Genesis will have to change the calendar. It is likely that we will have to replace February break with instructional days or add instructional days on to the end of the year. We will send out a survey to collect parent feedback for Board consideration.
Cell Phones – Remember that Genesis does not allow scholars to bring cell phones or any other personal electronic devices on campus (please see the Handbook for more information on this policy). If parents have extraordinary circumstances that require their scholar to have a cell phone on campus, those parents must reach out to one of our Deans of Students to request a meeting for cell phone approval. Our Girls Academy Dean is Ms. Taryn Rice (trice@giacademy.org) and our Boys Academy Dean is Mr. Eddie Lovett (elovett@giacademy.org).

Dear Genesis Family,
It has been one-year since all of our lives were changed by an invisible and relentless enemy – a virus – that does not care who you are or where you come from. But, we may be on the verge of defeating it. The fight is not over. Let us continue to be diligent about protecting the health and well-being of our families and ourselves. As usual, our prayers are with you.
Below are important updates we wanted to provide for you at this time.
Milestones Testing
As per the Georgia Department of Education, all scholars in grades 3-9 are expected to take the Georgia Milestones this year. Testing begins the week of April 26 (a complete schedule will be mailed at a later date). Testing can ONLY be administered in-person, on-site at the Genesis campus. However, schools cannot require scholars to take the test if those scholars are being instructed in an all-virtual setting. Those parents can-opt out. Scholars who are being instructed in a hybrid or in-person model will be scheduled for testing (given they would already be on campus).
Possible Return to Campus
It was noted above that in-person scholars will be expected to take the Milestones. Of course, Genesis is all-virtual at the moment. We will continue to have an all-virtual option this semester, no matter what. However, decreasing infection rates and increasing vaccinations make a return to campus for in-person instruction a more realistic option. Here is where we stand:
- Fall 2021 – Genesis fully expects to be back to in-person learning at the beginning of August (the final calendar will be approved and posted this month). A lot can happen between now and August, but everyone should plan for an August return.
- Spring 2021 - Genesis has not made a decision about returning this semester. Why? Because we need to get feedback from our parents. Your past feedback was vital to helping us plan and we are asking you to once again fill out a survey to help us plan again. We can only use the feedback we actually get so we really need the most responses possible, as soon as possible. We will then hold a Town Hall meeting next week to update everyone on what we learned and our options going forward. Please fill out the survey here by Tuesday of next week, March 16
Thank you for your support and perseverance throughout this year.
P.S. Prior to taking the survey, please feel free to review the information below regarding the basic features of the options that are most likely to be available, IF and when we return to campus:
Additional Information: Learning and Instructional Options to Consider
All-Virtual Learning – Everything remains as is if we decide to remain virtual-only. In a perfect world, scholars would have a teacher dedicated to teaching a virtual group only. However, if you choose an all-virtual option for your scholar, he/she may be taught by a teacher who is also teaching scholars in-person at the same time. This would depend on how many families choose a particular option.
In-Person Learning – Scholars would be on campus every day (unless a special asynchronous day is scheduled). Keep the following in mind:
- In-person scholars may be in a classroom setting with a teacher that is also teaching scholars virtually at the same time.
- If point #1 is true, in-person scholars may receive instruction primarily by computer, in order to keep the experience consistent for everyone (similar to a Learning Pod setting, but with the actual teacher).
- If the number of scholars that opt-in to in-person learning exceeds the maximum allowed in a socially-distanced classroom, a hybrid learning model (see below) would be offered to accommodate all scholars.
Hybrid Learning – This would mean choosing to have your scholar alternate (by day or by week) in-person instruction with virtual instruction in the manner described above for each option.
Learning Pod – The Learning Pod provides adult supervision while scholars learn virtually. The supervising adults may be able to offer support and guidance, but they are not assigned as classroom teachers.
Again, we need everyone to respond to this survey by next Tuesday, March 16, to make sure your input is considered and we have the data needed to present to you during next week's Town Hall. Details for the Town Hall will be forwarded in a separate email.
Respectfully,

Dear Parents,
We start this week after commemorating the life and impact of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Please know that our team is striving to support our families in a way that honors Dr. King’s commitment to service, sacrifice, and uplift.
Whatever you need, please make sure you reach out until you get to someone who can help you. Encourage your older scholars to do the same. There is always a way for all of us to do better and be better.
We welcome your feedback and ideas in this partnership to prepare our scholars for success in a world that judges them on everything but the “content of their character.” We press on – together.
Virtual Learning – Genesis is still virtual until further notice. Several districts are opening back up. However, given there are new, more contagious strains of the COVID-19 virus, and most of our school community has not had an opportunity
to get vaccinated, we thought it best to try to keep our scholars, families, and staff as safe as possible. If anything changes, we will update you. Remember, our Learning Pod is available for in-person support.
Grades – In order to make sure we consider all concerns and issues, and to make sure that calculations are accurate, we have delayed finalizing Semester
1 grades until the end of this week. What you currently see in Power School may change.
Families of scholars in grades 5-9 can find additional details (specific to those grades) in an e-mail sent today from Mr. Christian.
Parent Reviews – As an organization committed to improvement, we would like to hear from you. Please fill out this quick one-question survey to let us know how we are doing.
Teacher Feedback – We usually hear from parents when things are not going well. We do appreciate that feedback because we want to know how we can better support our scholars and families. But I also want to encourage you to send a quick note every now and then to a teacher when things are going well (and feel free to copy administration/directors on the good stuff as well). Positive comments help reinforce what we are doing well so we know to keep doing it. Thank you to those who send positive notes already.
Chess Team – Genesis is forming its inaugural Chess Team. If you have a scholar who plays, or who is interested in working hard to learn how to play
at a competitive level, please fill out this Chess Team Survey
Testing – For planning purposes, please note the dates for the following upcoming tests. Additional information will be provided at a later time.
- WIDA/ACCESS Test (Feb. 1 – March 1)
– This is a yearly state-mandated test for English Language Learners.
- MAP (Feb. 3-5) – All scholars were expected to take the initial MAP benchmark exam in the Fall. The second test is to determine growth.
- Write-Score (Jan. 28) – Similar to MAP,
all scholars take the Write-Score benchmark test for writing. This is the second test.
Canvas – All teachers in grades 3-9 should be up and running on Canvas (K-2 is still in the testing phase).
Our Tech team did a video training last fall (click here) and also published
this document showing parents how to create and log on to their canvas accounts.
Parents should reach out to their homeroom teacher if they have questions about what is being posted to Canvas.
Reception/Customer Service Update – We want you all to welcome Ms. Shanice Cazaubon as a new, dynamic member of the Genesis Team!!! She will now be the
primary voice you hear when you call the main office. Ms. Simmonds is still with Team Genesis, and will be supporting Ms.Cazaubon during her transition, but is taking on additional duties to support Genesis’ operational needs.
Respectfully,
Dr. Samms
Happy New Year Genesis Family!
Our hope is that you had blessed holiday season and an opportunity to connect with family and loved ones in a meaningful way.
A couple of quick notes:
- No School Monday - Monday, January 4 is a Teacher Planning Day. Scholars are off on this Monday.
- Asynchronous Learning Week - Tuesday, January 5 begins our Asynchronous Learning Week. Scholars will be provided virtual work they can complete independently. Teachers will be in planning sessions all week.
CORRECTION: Expectation for Attendance for Asynchronous Days:
Scholars will receive credit for attendance each day when assignments have been completed as designated by their teachers. These assignments will be completed in Canvas and on other websites by the assigned times as communicated by each teacher.
There is no need to log into class Zoom links during the asynchronous learning days. Look for official teacher communications for assignment details.
- Parent Survey – Once again, we are asking parents to fill out a survey to help us better understand the needs of our families and if those needs are changing. Thank you for your time and attention.
· Survey Link: https://forms.gle/GMLUGz875zKQWXzF6
- Learning Pod – As a reminder, Genesis contracts with Global Technologies to provide in-person supervision for scholars whose parents have to work. The Learning Pod is providing service this week, beginning Tuesday, January 5.
Thank you and please look for another communication tomorrow to provide more details on asynchronous learning.
Dear Genesis Family,
As we head into the break, I want to make every attempt to alleviate any stress you may feel in these challenging times. I have included below some additional information and direction that I hope will help make your holiday a more restful and joyful time
of year.
The message provides information on:
- Final Grades
- The Plan for the First Week in January
- Late/Missing Work
FINAL GRADES
We know that this is the time of year when families and teachers are stressed about final grades. First, let me say that the end of the semester means
no additional work will be assigned. But it does not mean that grades are "locked in."
At the end of every semester, the administration audits grades to determine if adjustments need to be made due to errors or miscommunication. Sometimes there are assignments that still need to be graded (see below note about late/missing work).
Our ultimate goal is to get it right. If a scholar has truly earned a low grade, we will continue to work with them. (Note: Tutorials begin in January). If a scholar received, but did not earn a low grade, we will make a change.
If you have concerns, please reach out to your scholar's teacher and
copy the Executive Director listed below:
-
- Ms. Dees (rdees@giacademy.org) - Grades K-2, Special Education and English-Learner services
-
- Dr. LaVoulle (clavoulle@giacademy.org) - Grades 3-9 ELA, Social Studies, Art
-
- Mr. Christian (nchristian@giacademy.org) - Grades 3-9 Science, Tech/Engineering, Math, Health/PE
Keep in mind that the Genesis staff is on break until January 4th (scholars report on the 5th). Parents should not expect messages to be reviewed until then. On January 4th
you may also e-mail info@giacademy.org or call the main office at 404-990-3844 if you need additional assistance.
ASYNCHRONOUS LEARNING: January 5th - 8th
When scholars return from the break they will have a full week of asynchronous learning.
-
- Asynchronous learning allows scholars to work independently on teacher-prepared assignments
-
- Scholars will follow the same schedule as normal (with minor changes for some).
-
- Parents and scholars will receive a reminder and additional information by close of business, January 4th.
-
- Teachers will be engaged in comprehensive training and planning workshops during the day but will be able to check on scholar progress.
-
- The assignments will allow scholars to preview the basics of new material that will be taught the second week back from the break (January 11-15)
LATE/MISSING WORK
We know virtual learning is challenging. Most teachers are allowing late work to be turned in.
Scholars with missing work should do their absolute best to complete missing work over the break. Keep in mind that teachers will not be able to provide additional support or begin grading late assignments until January 4th, 2021.
Teachers will grade the most recent missing assignments first. Unfortunately, there are no guarantees that assignments from the first academic quarter will be graded. We will do our best.
WISHING YOU HAPPY HOLIDAYS!!!
Thank you for being part of the Genesis family.
Given all that is going on in the world, this is the time of year when I hope we are all reminded, once again, of the importance of family and community. We hope you use this break to rest, connect with family, and take the time to share and receive as much
love as you possibly can.
Be safe, be healthy, be blessed and we will see you in the new year!
Remember: Scholars Report on Tuesday, January 5th!!

Dear Genesis Family,
I hope that this holiday season provides you with some measure of peace, joy, and blessings. Those are things that many in our country, indeed in our world, are struggling to hold on to. Please know
that our team is here to provide any support that we can to help you through these continuing difficult times. Please reach out if you have any questions, concerns or needs.
Our team is trying to do its very best, but we know that we will make mistakes. Let us know how we can do better and we will make every reasonable effort to do so. If you are not sure who to reach out to, or if you need immediate assistance, please e-mail
info@giacademy.org or call Ms. Ronnalyn Simmonds at the main office at 404-990-3844.
Genesis News and Notes
Accreditation - Genesis was recently accredited by the Georgia Accrediting Commission (GAC). Congratulations to the entire Genesis team of faculty, staff, and Board members for building a program that impressed the GAC reviewers.
Reopening Plans - The Genesis staff has worked diligently to prepare for an eventual return to campus. However, please know that leadership will continue to monitor infection and hospitalization rates before making any decision on returning to the campus. We miss our scholars greatly (our calling and purpose is to teach – in-person). But the danger to our community is still very real.
We will send another parent survey prior to the break to better understand childcare options and needs for the Spring. Keep in mind that Genesis hosts a learning pod on site for families who need someone to supervise their scholar(s) during the day. Please reach out to
yulandabaker@gtafa.org for more information.
Note: The state of Georgia now has two programs that provide financial assistance to families in need of learning pod service.
Academic News
Semester Exams - Scholars in grades 5-9 will be taking Semester Exams in core subjects during the last week of school (December
14-18) before Christmas break. A schedule will be provided soon. Most classes will be preparing for Exams this week. Scholars will also have a modified schedule during Exam week that will provide more time for studying.
Missing Work and Saturday School – We know that virtual learning is a challenge and we are willing to work with our families and scholars. But it is important for our scholars to make their best effort to turn in work. Please check-in with your scholar this week to find out if they are missing any work.
Genesis has begun requiring scholars who miss work to attend additional Zoom session in the afternoon and on Friday evenings, and in-person sessions on Saturdays if needed.
Canvas - As a reminder, Genesis is transitioning to the Canvas on-line platform to assign and share student work. The Genesis Tech Support Team recently held a webinar for parents on how to access the system.
The webinar is being posted to our website.
If, after viewing the webinar, you have additional questions on how to use Canvas, please contact techsupport@giacademy.org. If you have questions about what is (will be) posted on Canvas (and when), please contact your scholar’s teacher.
Academic Concerns - As we get near the end of the semester, please make sure you are touching base with your scholar's teachers on progress. If you have difficulty reaching a teacher, please contact one of the Executive Directors:

Dear Genesis Family,
Today is of course Election Day and a teacher planning day, and your scholar does not have class today.
However, this is a perfect time to make sure every scholar is caught up on any work that has not been completed. It is also a time for parents and scholars to check Power School and reach out to teachers with questions or concerns. Teachers are working
today but, given it is Election Day, they will not be available after 2 p.m.
If your scholar is completely caught up, this is a great day to review notes and old assignments, or just read a book (most of our scholars still do not read enough).
Note: We are aware that Spanish grades for 8th and 9th graders have to be entered into the system. That will be taken care of this week and parents should look for a separate communication about the plan going forward.
Finally, if you have voted, congratulations! If you have not,
GO VOTE!
Have a great day!
Dear Genesis Family,
Progress Reports have been sent to your e-mail address. The purpose of these reports is to provide a mid-semester update on grades. Keep in mind that these reports only include the
current grade information in the system.
The information in the progress report may be based on incomplete information: teachers may need to add assignments and/or enter grades. In addition, some grades are the result of very few assignments. Therefore, these reports should be the beginning
of a conversation between parents and scholars, parents and teachers, and scholars and teachers. We will
all make the necessary adjustments going forward to give our scholars the best chance at success.
A couple of additional notes:
- If your scholars has an IEP, your progress report may be delayed an additional day. Schedules had to be readjusted to meet state compliance requirements.
- If your scholar is in an AP course, please check the Edgenuity platform for the most accurate grade report.
If you have questions or concerns, please first reach out to your scholar’s teacher for clarification. If you have difficulty reaching the teacher, or if you are not satisfied with an explanation or decision,
reach out to the appropriate member of the Leadership Team:
- STEM Teachers – Mr. Christian (nchristian@giacademy.org)
- Humanities Teachers – Dr. LaVoulle (clavoulle@giacademy.org)
- K-2 Teachers – Ms. Dees (rdees@giacademy.org)
I am available if needed.

Dear Genesis Family,
As always, I wish your family health, wholeness, and blessings. As we begin our second quarter of school, our hope is that we are settling into a routine that is both consistent and effective for our scholars and their families. What was normal before is not possible, but we hope this “new normal” will still provide scholars with opportunities to do great things. But please know that we continue to need your feedback to make this process the best it can possibly be. Excellence is still our goal, no matter how challenging the journey.
Below are a few important updates for the coming week:
Parent Survey: In-Person vs. Virtual Learning
A survey was sent to parents prior to the break. There were only 100 responses (we have well over 500 families). It is important that our families respond when we need them, and we NEED YOU. Your responses will help us plan effectively for your scholar’s education in these trying times.
FILL OUT THE RE-OPENING SURVEY: https://forms.gle/8VVCs4cgyA7neS7C8
Curriculum Nights
Genesis will be hosting virtual Curriculum Night presentations this week. The schedule is listed below. You will receive information soon about where/how to access the virtual session:
- Grades K-2: Wednesday, October 21st @5:00 pm
- Grades 3-5: Wednesday, October 21st @6:30 pm
- Grades 6-7: Thursday, October 22nd @5:00 pm
- Grades 8-9: Thursday, October 22nd @7:00 pm
Nutrition Program Application
Filling out the Free/Reduced meal application does not mean that you want meal services or that you have to use meal services. Having your data helps us give the best presentation possible to potential funders. They want an accurate report on who is (and is not) eligible for free/reduced meal service. But they also want to know how involved/responsive our parents are. Your responses matter, no matter what those responses are!
Fill out the Nutrition Program Application Here: https://www.nlappscloud.com/Welcome.aspx?api=d8586aa6a55d6a2757ee452a728b9d1b#loaded
Learning Pod
Given Genesis is still implementing an all-virtual model until further notice, we want to remind our families that we have partnered with Global Tech Academy to manage a Learning Pod on campus. Global Tech will supervise scholars whose parents require that type of service to make virtual learning work. In addition, there may be some support for families who can demonstrate need. Please reach out to Mrs. Baker at Global Tech Academy, globalt4748@att.net, or (678) 662-3558 to inquire about the Learning Pod if this an option your family needs.
1st Quarter Progress Reports
Expect Power School grades for first quarter to be finalized during this week and for progress reports to be made available at the end of this week. Be mindful that progress reports are not report cards. Your scholars’ grades can improve (or regress) from this point forward.

Dear Genesis Family,
I hope this e-mail finds you well. I am well aware that there are still many challenges that you are likely facing, as are we. However, I am still confident that we each have the internal strength and commitment to push through whatever comes our way because our love for our children – the love that conquers all - is just that great. And if we share that commitment, for the benefit of all our scholars – as the village – we will win!
A couple of important updates:
Fall Break– Genesis will be on Fall Break the week of October 12.
Re-opening Plans– We are holding steady and watching the data. The reality is that the re-opening decisions we are seeing are experiments with the health and safety of our families and communities – communities that are much more likely to get sick, hospitalized, and experience death (CDC). Several colleges and K-12 institutions have re-opened, only to close again. Professional football games are being canceled. Even the President could not avoid the virus under the current re-opening strategy. I am not interested in experimenting with the health and well-being of any member of the Genesis family. Flu season is coming soon. We will wait and we will keep you posted.
Parent Survey– While we wait, we are making sure we finalize plans for re-opening when it makes sense to do so. To that end, it is time to survey our families about concerns related to the timing and type of reopening. Please fill out as soon as possible to help us serve you better.
Survey Link: https://forms.gle/dqs1ggvMYhrUttVe7
Virtual attendance notices– We have automated our attendance tracking system. That was done to make sure parents were automatically notified of possible issues. That does not mean the information is always correct. Be sure to reach out to the teacher who reported the absence/tardy if you need correction. Call the front desk if you do not hear from the teacher. All excused absences and/or doctor's notes should be forwarded to Ms. Simmonds, rsimmonds@giacademy.org, for entry into our attendance tracking system.
Power School– All scholars should be uploaded in Power School. Assignments and grades should be uploaded going forward. This is the time to check Power School and ask your scholar(s)’ teacher(s) about any concerns you may have. Please do not wait. All Parent Power School Account Letters with parent login information were emailed to parents on September 15th. If you do not have your Power School login, reach out to Ms. Simmonds, rsimmonds@giacademy.org, or Mrs. Julia Neal at JNeal@giacademy.org.
Sports and Activities - The Deans sent out an Extracurricular Activities and Athletics survey earlier on the 14th and 15th of September. Based on the interest expressed on that survey, tryouts for basketball (this Saturday) and cheerleading (next week) have been scheduled and sent under separate communication. (Schedule will also be posted to the website later today).
Please address questions to your Dean:
• Ms. Taryn Rice – Girls Dean (trice@giacademy.org)
• Mr. Eddie Lovett – Boys Dean (elovett@giacademy.org)
Parent Meetings - Genesis has been hosting parent meetings to provide updates regarding the expectations around managing virtual instruction at home, Google Classroom, PowerSchool, etc. Meeting information was sent out earlier via Email and Dojo. Grade K-2 held their meeting on September 24, grades 6-9 met yesterday evening at 5:00 pm and Grades 3-5 will meet next Monday, October 5th at 5:00 pm. These meetings are about clarifying expectations around “how” we successfully manage virtual learning. They are not curriculum and instruction meetings. See below.
Curriculum Night– Curriculum Nights will be scheduled for the week of October 19. You will receive a separate communication with details.
Lunch Forms– Even though you may not need food services from Genesis, it is vital that you fill out the Free and Reduced Meal eligibility form. We have to report the percent of families who are eligible for funding purposes. Please help us meet this federal funding requirement. You can find the Free and Reduced electronic lunch form here.
Communication– Communication between parents and schools is always an important consideration. We will never be perfect, but we can give you tips to make sure the process is more effective for you. We do expect all faculty and staff to respond to your questions within 48-hours. No, that does not always happen, but it is not intentional. What can you do?
1. E-mail vs. Dojo– E-mail is our formal requirement. But some teachers may see a Dojo message more quickly. However, if it is important, use E-mail, or use E-mail AND Dojo.
2. Resend– It may have been missed the first time
3. Call front desk– I say this a lot, but Ms. Simmonds is a great resource. She can follow-up on your behalf and provide direction on who should get the message if you do not know.
4. Contact Supervisor– We have restructured a bit but everybody at Genesis has a supervisor (just like every other organization). If you are displeased with communication (or anything else), go up the chain. It is not “telling on somebody” or “bothering” somebody. It is expected. We are re-launching our website and this information will be posted soon, but until then, here are the basics:
Person/Group/Issue Administrator/Supervisor Contact
STEM (Science, Math, Tech) and PE Teachers (Grades 3-9) Executive Director: STEM, Neal Christian nchristian@giacademy.org
K-2 Teachers and Paras, Special Ed and ESOL Teams Executive Director: K-2, Renetta Dees rdees@giacademy.org
Humanities Teachers Grades 3-9 (Reading, ELA, Social Studies, Languages, and Art) Executive Director: Humanities, Crystal LaVoulle, Ph.D. Clavoulle@giacademy.org
Scholar Conduct Issues / Clubs and Sports Dean of Students, Eddie Lovett - Boys Academy
Dean of Students, Taryn Rice - Girls Academy ELovett@giacademy.org
TRice@giacademy.org
If you cannot get a resolution, you should contact me (Head of Schools) by calling Ms. Simmonds at the main number. (E-mailing me is fine for the formal record but because I get so many it is not as effective as calling the front desk for urgent matters). Please do not wait until you are completely angry and frustrated. Leadership is always glad to hear from you as part of our overall improvement process.
Respectfully,

Dear Genesis Family,
I am humbled in this moment to have the responsibility to lead an organization of talented individuals who are committed to serving families in a time of crisis. Please know that no matter what is happening around us, or how many hiccups we have along the way, Team Genesis is working REALLY hard to make sure Genesis families will be served with care and quality.
Time has flown by faster than I could have imagined since the Town Hall. There is a lot happening and I will try to provide a brief synopsis of some key updates (other updates will hopefully come by the end of this week).
Calendar/Start of School – We are still scheduled to begin on August 17th. The revised calendar has been posted to the website.
Open House – The Genesis Team is currently planning to have Open Houses scheduled for the first day (or two) of school. Yes, that is unusual, but these are unusual times. We are not counting school days this year; we are counting and building relationships. Scholars and teachers will take time to get to know each other before we dive into virtual learning full blast.
Essential Worker “Learning Pod” – Based on survey results, Genesis is preparing to offer an on-site learning pod for Genesis scholars if all the adults in the household are essential workers. An e-mail has been sent to parents who indicated on our Fall Opening survey that nobody could be at home to supervise virtual learning. The responses to that e-mail will help us get a better understanding of the need for this service.
Registration (Returning Families) – All returning families have to register for the new year by completing their Returning Families Registration. We are admitting families off of our waitlist. It is important that we know if you are keeping your seat before school begins. If you do not register by next Wednesday, August 13th, we will have to open your seat up to a new family. Returning family registration is a fairly short process but is necessary so that we can ensure we have your scholar's most up to date information. The personalized Returning Family Registration for your scholar was emailed on July 30, 2020. Please use the link contained in that email to complete your registration. (Please note: this is not to be confused with the Intent to Return you completed back in February)
High School Parent Meeting – There is a Zoom meeting on tomorrow, Thursday, August 6 at 5:30 p.m. for parents of high school scholars. Those parents should have received an e-mail with the meeting information. If not, please reach out to info@giacademy.org.
Assessments – Team Genesis is currently planning to assess scholars as early as possible to make sure teachers have as complete an understanding as possible of where your scholars are before instruction ramps up. Genesis still intends to use MAP testing which will allow us to gauge growth over time.
School Supply Lists - School Supply Lists will be posted to the Great Start Page of the website by next Monday, end of day.
School Messenger – Parents should sign up for our “School Messenger” service. This will allow us to send real-time updates to your cell phones as a text message. All you have to do is text YES to 67587 to Opt-In. See more information on the Great Start Page.
https://genesisinnovationacademy.org/index.php/academics/student-resources/2019-20-great-start-page
Nutrition Survey – Parents who would like to pick up meals from Genesis will be able to do so if desired. The same rates would apply as during normal, in-person operations. Genesis will serve:
- Free meals (for families that qualify)
- Reduced priced meals: breakfast for $0.30 and lunch for $0.40
- Regular-priced meals: breakfast for $1.75 and lunch for $3.25
Please fill out the following survey if you are interested in picking up school meals and we will send you more information.
https://forms.gle/nm9xwrU1VTVRxZZ8A
Additional information from the Nutrition Department, including information regarding Free and Reduced Lunch applications, will be sent in a separate e-mail.
Tech Support – Genesis will support scholars and families who need help during virtual learning with technology issues and concerns. Please make sure to e-mail TechSupport@giacademy.org if you have any questions. The Technology team will be in touch with those families who have already notified us of their technology needs via our prior surveys.
Uniforms -
- In order to promote some sense of normalcy and routine, we expect scholars to prepare for virtual school just as they would for in-person school. Therefore, scholars are required to be properly groomed and in uniform tops during virtual learning:
-
- Grades K-5 should wear their Genesis Polo shirts with Logo;
- Grades 6-9 should wear their Genesis Oxford with logo and Genesis Tie (gentlemen) or Genesis Cross Tie (ladies)
- A Gently Used Uniform Sale is being scheduled for Saturday, August 14th. There are limited quantities but what we have we will make available for a nominal fee. Specific details will be sent out in a separate communication.
- New families who have not yet received uniform orders by the first day of school can have their scholars wear a plain white polo for the first few days while you await your uniform order.
- Please be sure to check our uniform page and only purchase uniforms from our authorized uniform vendors listed on our site. https://genesisinnovationacademy.org/index.php/student-life/uniforms. The uniform page has links to our specific Genesis Online stores. Prestige apparel is our brick and mortar vendor if you prefer to purchase from a store and not online.
- Families experiencing financial difficulty regarding uniforms should email us at uniforms@giacademy.org.
- If you have additional uniform questions please email uniforms@giacademy.org
Lost and Found - Any items in our Lost and Found will be made available on Saturday, August 14th for Returning Families that wish to retrieve items lost during the last school year. Additional information is forthcoming
Fall Opening Plan – The Re-Opening plan is posted on the website. Note: Please remember it is a working document and that information will be updated as needed. We will inform you when updates are made (changes will be based on feedback from teachers, staff, parents, the state, etc.).
Fall Opening Town Hall – The 1st Town Hall meeting (that was held on July 28th) is posted to the website for those who may have missed it or need to view it again.

Hello Genesis Family,
As things keep changing it is important to provide real-time updates and assurances. Certainly, the increasing number of COVID-19 cases, hospitalizations, and deaths in Georgia has led all of us to reconsider our approach to school (and other aspects of life). Genesis does not want to compromise the health and safety of its scholars or its faculty and staff. As a result of the current situation, Genesis will proceed as follows:
Delayed First Day/Opening – The Board has approved a start date of August 10th. (This is one week later than our original start date of August 3rd). I have the discretion to delay an additional week, if necessary, for planning purposes.
Virtual Opening - Genesis will have an all-virtual start to the school year. Everyone should assume that will be our plan for at least two weeks. If we do not believe we can offer an in-person option that is safe for scholars and teachers/staff, the all-virtual strategy will last longer. However, we are actively preparing for the possibility of in-person instruction at some point in the year (later in the Fall, January, etc.). We want to be ready. Options being worked on include:
In-Person Options – We are aware that some families may need to work and do not have sufficient supervision for scholars at home. Genesis is committed to having an option for those families, even if it is being on campus, engaged in virtual learning. Those families will get priority if we have limited in-person seats/options. The number of in-person seats will be based on public health data and the health and safety of scholars and staff. Given the uncertainty of virus mitigation, we do not want to lock in an exact date for this option.
All-Virtual – Even if public health data and Genesis safety protocols dictate in-person is a viable option, some parents will be uncomfortable sending their scholars to campus (especially if, like me, you have children or family members at home that have been diagnosed with underlying conditions). As a result, we will provide an all-virtual option for scholars for the entire first semester. The same will be true of second semester unless the public health situation changes dramatically.
Hybrid - Remember, the Genesis vision for this moment is to provide maximum flexibility for all of us to do what is best for our families in our unique situations. We do not intend to lock families into one option for an extended period; needs can change quickly. We will continue to work on a plan that 1) is flexible enough to allow a family to switch models if needed, and 2) does not require teachers to do an onerous amount of additional work. We believe we can do that. Our team is working hard to make that a reality.
Town Hall - We are tentatively scheduling a Town Hall meeting for both new and returning families on Tuesday, July 28th. We will present more specific aspects of our plan and address all questions. Note: We will continue to provide updates before the 28th to address pressing issues as they arise.
Additional Updates
Virtual Home Set-Up – We have compiled survey results and are preparing to address identified needs for additional devices and internet connections at home. If you expressed a need for either, please be on the lookout for communication from our Tech Team. If you have not completed the survey, the link is here: https://forms.gle/91QkrYk1mTRqzB8D7
Uniforms – During virtual class instruction, scholars are to wear their Genesis uniform tops and maintain school grooming requirements, per the Dress Code. Students cannot participate in Zoom/virtual conferences in their pajamas or lying in bed or on the couch. And scholars cannot turn the device camera off so that we cannot see them. Our uniform page is: https://genesisinnovationacademy.org/index.php/student-life/uniforms. (Note there is a 50% off sale currently being offered by French Toast)
Summer Reading – Summer Reading lists have been updated to include more titles on the Social Justice list for Middle and High School. Please help your scholars get started on their work while they have some time. Also, remember they have “work” to do, in addition to reading. The link to Summer Reading is here: https://www.genesisinnovationacademy.org/index.php/academics/summer-reading-lists
MAP Scores 2019-2020 – You should have received your MAP scores. If not, please reach out to Ms. Neal at JNeal@giacademy.org. The virtual process is locked in for next year, so results should get to you more quickly going forward.
Report Cards 2019-2020 – Grades are final and report cards are being sent virtually this evening and tomorrow morning. Apologies again for the way too lengthy delay (but we now have a process that works a lot better for 2020-2021). You will see Semester 1, Semester 2, and the Final Year letter grade. The Semester 2 grade includes the quarter 4 grade, if it helped your scholar (which was the factor that made this process more difficult than normal). If you see an “I” for incomplete, it means there was not enough information in the system to give your scholar a grade. There are about 4-5 scholars whose report cards have to be re-done due to a system glitch. Those parents will be contacted. If you need urgent support on this matter, reach out to JNeal@giacademy.org. Thank you for your patience!
Be safe, be healthy, be blessed!!!

Dear Parents,
It is now redundant to say how challenging these times are. You know that. Instead, my focus is on how we meet this challenge. Our Core Value for July is Enthusiasm, which is related to the spiritual value of Joy – having a sense of passion and purpose that cannot be shaken, dampened, or taken away by worldly concerns.
I wake up every day and choose Joy. This moment of challenge inspires me to work harder to find a way to serve and elevate our children above the limitations these times suggest. My purpose is clear to me. That gives me Joy (passion, hope, excitement, renewal) – every day. Our children need to see that in us. We can do this!

FALL (Future Business)
Plan for Fall Opening – There is a lot to talk about. Too much to put in a written message. Please click the link below for a video message about Genesis’ plans for the Fall. Keep in mind that it is a general outline and will not cover every question. A more detailed discussion will be presented at our next Town Hall meeting later this month (details will be sent at a later date).
- Video Link: https://jpotter.wistia.com/medias/qmqf4kd6np
- Additional Questions: info@giacademy.org
Fall Re-Opening Survey – Please fill out the survey at the link below. The survey asks about preferences and needs for Fall Re-Opening. We are using the data from our earlier survey to help plan. However, we know things change. Please provide the latest, best information you can. WE NEED 100% PARTICIPATION to help us effectively plan. THANK YOU.

The Great Start Page – The Great Start Page is a webpage dedicated to providing families all the relevant information they need to start the new year successfully. Visit the page to access information on uniforms, summer reading, supplies, nutrition, etc. The page will be updated on a regular basis.
- Great Start Page Link: https://www.genesisinnovationacademy.org/index.php/academics/student-resources/2019-20-great-start-page
Student Uniforms – The uniform page is live on our website. What is not listed there is that one of our uniform vendors, French Toast, typically has major sales during this time of the year. A major sale was targeted for the week of July 13th. Given the ever-changing world, those dates could change, so please check the website regularly.
Parent Resource Page – Our home page has a link to “Parent Resources.” That page lists items and updates related to the current crisis (Co-VID information, support services, education resources for home use, etc.). Once we begin school, that page will incorporate all parent information and resources, including the information on the Great Start page.
Supplies – Every year there is great anxiety about this. Let’s try not to feel that this year. We will get a list out soon but keep in mind that a lot of our work will be done virtually (even for scholars who learn on-site). It is easier to track, post, and grade virtual work. That, plus the current circumstances, means we will try to minimize the amount of supplies needed to begin school this year.
CURRENT (Business)
Summer Reading – Summer Reading is posted on our website. Please make sure your scholar has the required reading and assignment instructions so they can begin.
Electronic Benefits Transfer (EBT) – If your family was eligible for free-reduced meals during this past school year, you may also be eligible for an EBT allocation of $256 for each child. For more information, visit: https://dfcs.georgia.gov/pandemic-electronic-benefit-transfer
PAST (Old Business)
Lost and Found – Some scholar items may have been lost during the year and would not have been available for pick-up when we had “Item Pick-Up” days last month. We will be scheduling a day and time when families can search the lost and found in late July, prior to the beginning of school. Details will be provided at a later date.
Awards Announcements – Dojo announcements were sent out a couple of weeks ago highlighting scholars for academic excellence this past year. We will also highlight those scholars on our website and make that a tradition going forward.
Report Cards – This has been far more complicated and frustrating than anticipated. But remember, it is only difficult because the system was never set up to deal with optional grades for quarter 4 (which we promised we would count fairly). We have received confirmation of a fix to make sure your scholar gets an accurate report card. The representative from Power School should have a final version prepared before the end of the week. Report cards should be ready to send out electronically early next week.
MAP Results – Given the virtual world we now live in, we have been working on an efficient way to virtually distribute MAP test results. We received an update this evening from our Power School contact that MAP scores should be ready to go out electronically by the end of this week.

Dear Genesis Family,
As promised, an update on items of concern/interest is included below. We know that uncertainty can cause anxiety and stress, and we are committed to providing more definitive and detailed information and plans as we go forward. However, while we should not, and cannot, “drag our feet”, we also cannot rush out an ill-conceived plan. That will cause more stress than it cures. I therefore, continue to ask for your patience, knowing that we are working really hard to be a great school, with great instruction, that helps “raise” great scholars – no matter what is going on in the world.
UPDATES
School Year Plans – Genesis is actively planning for an on-time start to school on August 3rd. We know that things can change but we are working on contingency plans for: all-virtual, mixed virtual and in-person, and all in-person. This is a dynamic process so look for e-mail updates.
Tech Survey – Please use the link below to let us know your home technology situation. We want to make sure our plans for the fall take the needs of all of our families into consideration.
- Genesis Survey: Family Home Technology - https://forms.gle/67zTbhBDNT8sAggW8
Summer Reading – You should have received Summer Reading lists already. Please be aware that we will be changing the book reading expectations to reflect our commitment to teaching our children the Truth about Social Justice in this country. If you have already purchased the books, please have your scholar continue to read them. Reading is a good thing. We will simply be presenting more options and one additional requirement. The actual assignments (not just the titles) will be sent later as well.
Report Cards – Report Cards will be sent to parents via the Power School portal in PDF form. The process has been slowed by efforts to ensure grades are as accurate as possible given the challenges of virtual work. If you are not able to log-on to your Power School portal, please contact Mrs. Julia Neal at jneal@giacademy.org.
Power School Grades – As per the above, we are trying to calculate the most accurate grade possible, which is more challenging that usual due to the need to fairly account for fourth-quarter grades. Therefore, do not assume that what you see is in Power School is final. Please wait for the report card to be finalized.
Summer Schools and Supports – All families have already been contacted if they have a scholar in need of credit recovery or tutoring over the summer due to academic performance. If you are concerned that your scholar needs summer support, please reach out to your Academy Director.
MAP Scores – MAP scores should have been sent to you by your scholar’s teacher. If that did not happen, please reach out to your Academy Director.
Item Pick-Up – Families will be able to come to the campus the week of June 22 to pick up any items left in the building. Items will be bagged and labeled with scholars’ names. A schedule will be created based on grade level and sent to parents. Sibling items will be picked up together. Please look for more details soon.

Dear GIA Family,
It has been too long since I have sent an update. My plan was certainly to send a year-end update. And then I had hoped to add just a little word related to the negative impact of the pandemic on so many in the community we serve, and communities like it. And then I knew I had to address what happened with Mr. Ahmaud Arbery since it happened in “our own backyard.”
But before I could get that out, Mr. George Floyd was murdered, and well…let’s just say that had a major effect on what I felt I needed to say to this “village.” And I couldn’t find the words. No matter what I wrote it did not feel right. And so I decided to speak from my heart and let you hear me instead.
A video link is below. I try to convey, at least in part, where I am and what my intentions are in this moment as it relates to THIS family, THIS village, in THIS moment. I will follow-up later this week with a “regular” update. It did not seem appropriate to include it here.

Dear GIA Family,
I hope everyone was able to use Spring Break to connect with family and friends, to do something for yourself that brought you some joy, and... to just take a breath.
As we all try to make the best of a very difficult situation, it is important to acknowledge that some in our GIA family are praying for loved ones to recover, and others are praying for strength after loved ones have been lost. We join our prayers with theirs.
We also join with those praying for answers to questions of how they will pay bills, put food on the table and keep a roof over their head.
While we hope that praying for others produces miracles, the one thing that it does for sure is, helps us focus on the needs of others. So, after you pray, connect. Reach out to others. Check on them. Ask about their concerns – it might help take your mind off yours.
When you ask, “how are you doing?” and you get “OK” or “fine”, ask it again to get the real answer. And then just listen. If you can do more than that, please do so. But sometimes listening – connecting – is enough to help us get through.
Genesis Updates
Virtual Parent Meeting – Genesis will host an Informational webinar this week to provide a forum for you to ask any questions you may have about Genesis and your scholars’ education. Please look for details in the next couple of days.
Next School Year Calendar – The Board is considering two calendar options. Both have a fall start date of August 3, 2020. Please lock that date in (though given the current crisis, changes are possible). School will end on either May 21, 2021, or May 28, 2021. We will update you as soon as a decision is final (hopefully this week).
Summer School – Genesis is considering summer school of some type, given our scholars will have lost several days of instruction during this crisis. We cannot allow them to begin a new year behind where they need to be. Details are being worked out and we will inform you as plans develop.
Digital Learning Schedules – Expect schedules to be the same this coming week. Some adjustments may be made this week (teachers are always making adjustments). However, since this is the first week back from Spring Break, teachers and leaders will need to use this week to discuss and formalize additional changes.
Device and Internet Access – Genesis will reach out to parents this week to get feedback on home technology needs. Some parents may have believed they could make “homeschooling” work for a couple of weeks with what they had at home. Those families may need additional support for such a long-term closure. Stay tuned.
Instructional Support – Genesis has applied for a grant that provides funding for on-line tutoring. Hopefully, we will receive those funds to help us provide more one-to-one and small group services to help our scholars catch up.
Grades – As per the last update, we are grading scholar work. As a reminder, grades give us important information about what our scholars know. Parents should be prepared for virtual grades to dictate our plans for summer school, tutorials, and other forms of additional support. Like most issues, plans are ongoing.
Picking-up Personal Items – We are aware that many of you would like to retrieve some of your scholar’s personal items from the school. Plans are being made to allow access to the school, in compliance with state and city mandates. Families will be notified once a pick-up schedule is finalized.
Attendance – Teachers have been instructed to take attendance in Power School to track how often scholars are logging on for virtual instruction. This will help us to determine which families may need additional support during the virtual learning phase.
I am aware that many of the updates indicate that we are still working through finalizing plans. Unfortunately, that is a function of the season we are in. We will try to update you more frequently as plans change or are finalized. Look for more updates this week.
As always, stay in touch, be safe, be healthy, be blessed!

GIA Academic Resources for Parents April 1, 2020
Dear GIA Family,
Please know that our main goal during these unusual times is the health and safety of our families. Everything else is secondary. We will certainly do everything we can to provide meaningful learning opportunities for your scholar while they are home. However, we have no intention of adding to you or your family’s stress. If our digital learning plans are difficult for you to manage right now, just let us know. We will work together to figure something out.
At this point, we cannot mandate anything or penalize anyone for not figuring out how to make “at home learning” work. There are simply too many things that are uncertain. We do hope that you do the best you can, and that you encourage your scholars to do the same. We do not know how long this shut-down will last, but I want to impress upon you how important it is that we continue to push our scholars to learn and grow.
When we do come out of this, and we WILL come out of this -- together – I am sure we want our scholars to be as prepared as possible to continue to excel. We cannot allow them to LOSE ground. We will press forward as best we can, updating you along the way. Please ask all the questions you need to. We are definitely in this together.
Please read the updates below:
- Digital Learning Schedules – Our teachers will be available all week, each week, for our scholars. Your scholar’s teacher(s) will let you know when (day and time) they will provide live virtual instruction and when they will be available to answer scholar questions about lessons or assignments. We expect to record the live instruction and make it available for scholars who missed it or want to review it.
- Devices and Internet Access – We are aware that some of you have limited access to technology at home. We are still looking into options to support you. In the meantime, as noted above, please know that we will be flexible regarding due dates and times. Please be sure to let your homeroom teacher know about any issues, and be very specific. As always, let your Director know if you need additional support beyond what a teacher is able to communicate or provide.
- Instructional Support – If your scholar has an IEP, the teachers that have served your scholar will also have virtual hours set aside for additional support. Please allow a couple of days for the support schedule to be finalized. We will continue to make adjustments as needed to ensure that your scholars get the best possible support under the circumstances.
- Nutrition / Meal Service – It has been confirmed that all of the large districts in Metro Atlanta are serving meals from some of the schools in their region/area. The meal service will be available to ALL school children who are in need of meals, not just the children who attend district schools. We have attached updates in English and Spanish that list instructions and locations for each school district.
- (View/ Download) Aviso importante con respecto a Ubicaciones de distribución de alimentos de emergencia en su comunidad
- (View / Download) Important Notice Regarding Emergency Food Distribution Locations in Your Community
Morning Start Time: Communication – Please note that we are moving our office hours an hour later to 9:00 a.m. Teachers are also expected to be available for scholars by 9:00 a.m. (instead of 8 a.m.). Parents should expect to reach the office, and scholars should expect to reach their teachers on-line, until 3 p.m.
Take care, be blessed, and be safe!

Dear Parents,
We are confirming that Genesis Innovation Academy will close the campus starting Monday, March 16, 2020 for an indefinite period of time. Families should anticipate the campus being closed for a minimum of two weeks, but should be prepared for the possibility of a much longer closure period.
Instruction – It is important to note that while the campus will be closed, instruction will continue. Genesis’ teachers will be offering virtual instruction and/or learning activities to every scholar in every grade, during the school day. Parents are expected to prepare their scholars to receive instruction/do schoolwork each school day. Today’s Digital Learning Day was planned to allow us to test our, and our families’ capacity to manage digital learning successfully. We have learned a lot from today and will update families before end of day Monday, March 16th with more detailed plans for next week and beyond. To help us adjust our plans accordingly, please be sure to communicate with your scholar’s homeroom teacher if you had any concerns or difficulties with the Digital Learning Day assignments. Please keep in mind that this is an unusual situation, and plans will likely change. However, also know that we are committed to making sure that your scholars are learning while they are being kept safe at home.
Special Education Services – If your scholar has an IEP/504, you will receive additional correspondence next week from a member of the Special Education Team. That communication will provide more information about how your scholar will be appropriately supported while engaged in digital learning.
Tutoring – In-person tutoring is suspended until Genesis is cleared to reopen the campus. However, Genesis is working on plans to provide virtual tutoring to scholars (which is a service we currently provide to some of our scholars while they are on campus). Please keep in mind that virtual tutoring options will be offered first to the scholars most in need.
Parent-Scholar-Teacher Conferences – To reiterate, Genesis teachers will be working while the campus is closed. Time will be set aside for virtual conferences to discuss your scholar’s academic progress. The schedule will be sent once it is finalized.
Adult Communication – Digital learning has not changed the expected communication protocol for parents and teachers.
- Formal Genesis E-Mail Updates - Formal updates from Genesis Innovation Academy regarding school closure and changes to the calendar or campus-wide schedule will be sent via e-mail. Families are responsible for checking their e-mails in order to stay current. Additional correspondence may be sent via Class Dojo as a back-up, but Dojo is not the formal communication platform for Genesis.
- Web Updates - Genesis updates will be posted to the Genesis website for reference.
- Assignments and Grading - Formal teacher communication about assignments is still expected to be placed in PowerSchool. Formal Parent-Teacher communication about class/course expectations or about individual scholars is expected to occur over e-mail. (Teachers may choose to use Class Dojo or Google Classroom as a back-up to formal communication or for informal communication).
- Teacher Responses - Teachers are still expected to answer parent e-mails within 48 hours. If parents are not receiving the expected communication in a timely fashion, they should not hesitate to send their Academy Director an e-mail. If the Academy Director does not respond timely or appropriately, parents should contact Dr. Samms, the Head of Schools.
- Phone Calls – Parents may call the school during the hours of 8:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m. to receive support and have questions answered in real time. Parents should not expect teachers to communicate during the school day via phone.
Scholar Communication – Scholars will be expected to log-on to various platforms to receive instructions, to study, ask questions and to do actual work. Parents may need to help scholars access their work sites. However, please use this as an opportunity to coach your scholars on proactively communicating with their teachers if they have questions.
Extra-Curricular Activities – At this time all Genesis athletic teams have suspended operations. In addition, all field trips and events have been postponed. We will continue to update you if and when events are canceled and under what circumstances refunds will be processed and how.
Nutrition/Meal Service – We are aware that some of our families rely on meal service at school to feed their children healthy meals. We are working diligently with the state to determine what options are available and will update you early next week as we know more.
We understand the challenge this event has presented for our Genesis family, our community, our state, and our nation; our thoughts and prayers are with those who have been most directly impacted by COVID-19. We always strive to make Genesis both a great school and a great family. Many of us who are on the Genesis Team have children who attend school here every day. We are in this with you and will do all we can to take care of all of OUR children.
Please feel free to reach out to any member of the Genesis Team if you have questions.
Blessings to you all,
Gavin Samms, Ph.D.

Dear GIA Family,
I had hoped to send an update sooner, but this crisis has required me to do a whole lot more as a leader, manager, husband, father, and minister than normal. The adjustment process has been frustrating, but I’m good now. I have to be. I’m needed. The problem was comparing my “now” to my “normal.” But life is not normal. So, it is okay if you feel out of sorts or if you are having a hard time getting your bearings. Though it might frustrate you, it is okay if every plan you made for the family to try to keep things normal does not turn out perfectly. This is not normal. As they say, “don’t sweat the small stuff.” But it is sometimes difficult to know what is “small” and what is “big” and truly matters. I suggest we focus on the important things that we might have lost sight of before the crisis; things that now forcefully demanded our attention: the health, well-being, and appreciation of the people we love.
So, don’t let this be a time when being around family all day becomes annoying and frustrating (I know it’s hard – it’s ALL day, EVERY day). Pause and treasure every single minute of this time with family. There are too many who wish they could have those “ALL day, EVERY” day moments back, and far too many who will have that same wish in the coming days and months. This is not normal. But if normal is us taking our loved ones for granted, then maybe we should create a new normal. Hug the people in your house and tell them you love them – EVERY day. They need it and you need it. (Wash your hands first and wear a mask if you have to – ‘cause this is not normal).
Genesis updates are included below (and in the attachment):
Schools Closures – The Governor has closed school for the remainder of the school year. We plan to continue virtual learning for the remainder of the school year term that was planned. We will keep you updated on specific details, including the calendar for 2020-2021.
Teachers - Many of you who were not formally trained as teachers are now experiencing, on a small-scale, what is like to teach children for several hours each day. It is not easy. Here are some memes that you might relate to: https://us.hola.com/lifestyle/20200326flx91stxpc/coronavirus-parents-homeschool-funny-memes. I don’t know what Teacher’s Appreciation looks like this year, but as a start, please send thank you notes when you can.
Spring Break – Genesis will have Spring Break as scheduled next week. There will be no digital instruction provided. This will give us (and probably many of you) an opportunity to rethink and regroup our instructional plans and personally regroup from the shock of the crisis. Please do not expect teachers to respond during this break. Scholars should “chill.” But for those who would prefer to have their scholars engaged over the break, suggestions are provided below.
Digital Learning Schedules – As per our last update, parents and scholars should be aware of their scholars digital learning schedule. If not, please reach out to your homeroom teacher, or your Director if you do not get a response. Scholars should have about 1-hour of virtual instruction per subject per week. We know there is some anxiety around what to do with your “precious angels” for a full day, EVERY day. Please keep in mind that GIA cannot recreate “normal school” under the circumstances, but we will continue to do our very best to make sure scholars continue to learn and that you have resources to supplement what teachers do.
Device and Internet Access – As per the last update, homeroom teachers did let us know who needed support, and we have tried to make sure all scholars are able to connect and complete their work. But recognize there are still some issues. Continue to keep your homeroom teacher informed about anything we might be able to help with. Some resources that may help include:
- X-Finity – If you are not connected to Wi-Fi, X-Finity is providing access to out-of-home hotspots. Please search for one near you, if needed (https://wifi.xfinity.com/)
- Comcast – If you are not connected, and would prefer an in-home connection, Comcast is offering two free months, and a low rate thereafter. Please go to the site for details (https://www.internetessentials.com/covid19).
Instructional Support – If your scholar has an Individualized Education Plans (IEP), a support teacher/professional should have updated you on how your scholar’s plan will be implemented in a virtual environment. If you have not heard from anyone, please reach out to Dr. Jacquita Henderson (jhenderson@giacademy.org). Dr. Henderson will oversee Instructional Support on an interim basis. She has run all of these programs before, at a high-level, and in a state-charter school, so we are glad to have her expertise. Note: Dr. Solomon was offered a new opportunity and is no longer with Genesis. We wish her well and thank her for her service to children and families.
Grades – We have just received guidance from the state on how to determine formal report card grades. We are reviewing that information and will get back to you as soon as possible. We do know that we will not penalize scholars for poor results during this crisis. However, we do expect scholars to do their best and we will grade them on the quality of the work they submit. Why? Because it is in all of our best interest to know what our scholars understand and are able to do.
Nutrition – Hopefully, families who needed access to meals were able to use information in our last update on district-based sites providing free breakfast and/or lunch. Some of those sites may be closing during Spring Break. Check the website in the district you live in for more information about possible alternatives. Also, check out the Atlanta Food Bank (https://acfb.org/covid-19-response) and YMCA (https://www.ymcaatlanta.org/blog/current-ymca-hunger-relief-programs/) for additional options, if needed. There is another program that delivers groceries for families in need: https://atlsurvival.org/food/
Home-School Suggestions
If you need ideas about how to manage this “homeschool” situation, we will try to provide suggestions and resources to hopefully make it easier for you.
Home Strategies
- Schedule/Routine - Create a regular daily routine for scholars (it helps them)
- Note: As per the intro, if the schedule is adding stress, change it or ditch it
- “Me Time” - Schedule some “Me” Time for Mom/Dad (you need it)
- Family Time – Go for a walk together, play a game, watch a movie
- Friend Time – Create a virtual lunch meeting for your scholar and friends
Academic Resources – Attached are some FREE reading resources that you might find helpful if you want to give your scholars something academic to do or if you just want to let them read for fun (note: sometimes free versions have less options).
Life & Health Resources
- United Way – General help for families who have unmet needs: https://www.unitedwayatlanta.org/need-help/
- Crisis Text Line – This is a counseling resource for a crisis. Just in case you need it: https://www.crisistextline.org/
As always, stay in touch and let us know if you need anything. If we can’t help you, we will find someone who can.
Be safe, be healthy, be blessed!

Dear GIA Family,
Below are important updates regarding the coronavirus (COVID-19):
Georgia Department of Health - Attached is an informational PowerPoint from the Georgia Department of Public Health. The public understanding of the coronavirus is evolving but the attached represents the latest information.
Talking to Children - Also, below is a link from the National Association of School Psychologists that includes recommendations on how to talk to children about the virus: https://www.nasponline.org/resources-and-publications/resources-and-podcasts/school-climate-safety-and-crisis/health-crisis-resources/talking-to-children-about-covid-19-(coronavirus)-a-parent-resource
Genesis Digital Learning Day
The report today that Fulton County Schools is closing schools tomorrow due to a confirmed coronavirus case reminds us to exercise extreme caution and to prepare accordingly. Genesis is not a Fulton County School (and not an APS school) and we are not at the point where school will be cancelled. However, we must prepare for the possibility that school closure may become necessary. First, our Facilities Team will do additional sanitizing of the campus this evening (Monday). Secondly, Genesis is scheduling a Digital-Learning day this Friday to test our capacity to provide meaningful digital learning experiences for our scholars in the event that school closure is deemed necessary.
What: Digital Learning Day
When: Friday, March 13, 2020
Where: At Home
Who: All Genesis Scholars
Time: TBD - Teachers will provide assignments that require scholars to work for at least a half-day. Scholars will have to log-on to different platforms to verify “attendance.” Note: Keep in mind that Monday is a Teacher Workday/Professional Learning Day.
We will also use the Digital-Learning day / long weekend, for additional sanitizing and longer-term planning for possible school closure.
Given the uncertainty around how quickly the virus may spread, we ask that families be prepared for an unexpected change to these plans. If available information dictates that we require scholars to stay home sooner and/or for a longer period of time, or that we postpone events and trips that have been planned, we will be sure to inform parents as quickly as possible. This is a season in which we all have to be as prepared as we can be for the unexpected.
Yours in service,

Press Release / Advisory from Georgia Department of Health
Dear GIA Family,
We have attached a press release/advisory from the Department of Health (DPH) regarding the Coronavirus. Please read it as soon as possible so that you are informed. In short, they are stressing that 1) the risk to the general public is still low, and 2) there are already plans in place to address a possible flu epidemic/pandemic and that the Coronavirus should be treated similarly at this time. As such, Genesis will follow the general recommendations contained in the press release, in Georgia Department of Education advisories, and in Genesis health services policies and procedures:
- We will encourage scholars and staff to wash hands frequently with soap and water for at least 20 seconds
- We will encourage scholars to avoid touching eyes, nose, and mouth with their hands
- We will ask parents to keep sick children home from school until they’re fever-free for 24 hours without medication
- We will provide virus-prevention supplies at the school for staff and students, such as soap, hand sanitizer with at least 60% alcohol, tissues and Lysol Disinfectant Spray
- We will have our facilities team, supported by teachers, staff and scholars, sanitize classrooms and gathering spaces, especially frequently touched surfaces
- We will encourage everyone to cough/sneeze into an elbow or a tissue (and throw tissue immediately away).
In addition, please know that Genesis is finalizing plans to ensure that scholars and families will have options to receive instruction virtually, should the Department of Health advise school closures. We already have a well-integrated set of on-line platforms and we are confident that we will be able to effectively manage a virtual-driven educational process.
We will keep you updated on matters related to the virus and health concerns in general as we learn more.
Blessings to all.
