Summer Reading Lists

Girls' Academy

Genesis Innovation Girls Academy (Summer Reading)

Dear GEMS-

Summer is a wonderful time for traveling, going to camp, and hanging outside with friends, but for those days when it’s too hot, or you think “I’m bored,” we have the GIA Summer Reading Requirement!

Reading during the summer helps improve your reading skills as well as building your vocabulary, and help develop critical thinking skills to help you through life’s many challenges.

Choose TWO books from the list for your upcoming grade level. I have compiled a list of four to five books that you may choose from. At the beginning of next school year, your teacher will take up your completed Summer Reading Assignment for a grade.

You can find your summer reading books at the public library, bookstores, or online. Share your books with friends and family and talk about what you’ve read.

Most importantly, choose two books from the list that you will enjoy! Reading is meant to be fun. :)

Enjoy your summer,

Mrs. Dees

Genesis Innovation Boys Academy (Summer Reading)

Dear Parent/Guardian,

Summer is a great time for your child to practice what he has learned throughout the school year. There is no better activity for your child than to engage in reading for enjoyment. Not only will your child discover the joy of being lost in a book, he will practice the many skills and strategies he has learned all year.
Educators identify the knowledge students lose over the summer as a major challenge when starting off the new school year. However, students who read over the summer return to school ready to continue their learning with little or no learning loss.

The team at Genesis Innovation Academy for Boys has developed summer reading lists by grade for students in grades K – 7 (See Summer Reading List by Grade). All of the books on the summer reading lists should be easily accessible for purchase or from your public library. We expect every scholar to read at least the one mandatory book this summer and to return to school on July 31, 2018 prepared share what he learned from the summer readings. Based on the rising grade, your child must read the book that is highlighted in addition to any other book of his choice.

To assist you with helping your scholar choose a book, we have included the theme for each book. In addition, we included the Lexile reading level for students in Grades 2-7. For students in Grades K-1, please try to read as many books as possible. These books are short and the scholars can complete quite a few of them over the break.

Summer reading is meant to be enjoyable and we do not want students to have to struggle; we want reading to be fun and relaxing. The summer reading list is meant to be guide for students and parents; students can select books from other grade lists or even books that do not appear on a list, but they must read the mandatory book for their rising grade level. The important thing is that students read, read, read!
