All grades below are for rising scholars (i.e. scholar entering that grade this fall).
Dear GIA Families,
In light of the recent events that have unfolded not only across our nation but also right here in Georgia, we are reminded that Genesis must ensure our scholars are properly educated around topics of social justice. It was what we were founded to do in the first place.
We are witnessing a great push for transformative policy change that is a direct result of a proactive demand for that change. As a school community, it is important that we properly prepare our scholars to become more than bystanders, but agents of change.
We are charging our young scholars to commit to justice, equality, and humanity. As the village, it is our duty to provide “the space” and the opportunity for our scholars to learn how to become the change agents we expect them to be. As a result, we have provided an amendment to the original summer reading list to ensure our scholars have access to literature that is reflective of social justice, and to spark meaningful dialogue at home.
We have also outlined our expectations for their assignments: turn what they learn from what they read (or view) into meaningful action. The due date for the assignments is August 31st which should provide ample time for completion. However, we would recommend that scholars finish their work prior to the beginning of school, if possible, while they have this time to focus.
Finally, this work will require parent involvement, but we hope in the right way. For our youngest scholars in grades K-2, there is ALWAYS an expectation that parents read to and with their scholars. But for this assignment we expect parents to talk to scholars of all ages about their own life experiences and to help their children think about the world they live in, what they believe, who they are, and who they are becoming.
We look forward to seeing the great things your scholars will present!
